Game artist social networking

I've been wanting to expand my 3d social network, so tonight I broke down tonight and got a Facebook and a linkedin. Is there a polycount registry somewhere to connect with other artists? Or, what's the best way to do that? I haven't had a social network before, so I'm not really sure of how that works.

Could we start a list or something?

I'd also like to ask: are social networks good tools for this field ? And, what other sites are worth having? Twitter, Google+ , etc?

I'll just edit this and put it here, if any of you want to find me on facebook my name is Yuri alexander, feel free, would be nice to have some game art in my feed.

I usually follow a lot of games artists on Twitter.
I don't really like facebook but I have it though.
LinkedIn is probably the most professional one really, but...hmm, it doesn't feel "social" at all xD

Can't say I would bother with Facebook much (waste of time) I follow loads of great artists on twitter though, great way to get connections with people and exchange feedback and ideas.

Big advocate of both facebook and twitter. Its nice to see a stream of artists post awesome work one after another (and because of the lack of a word limit on FB, you get some artists posting their processes too).

I use mostly twitter as well. I use linkedin professionally, but facebook is only for close friends and family.

Yea I only opened up my Facebook to other artists a few months ago and it's flipping great seeing all the awesome art from your favourite peeps, and the cat pics!!! The never ending cat pics!!! .......from me bwah hahahaha

Tips for networking is to join groups and show off your work, friend requests will come thick and fast. My favourites at the moment are lunch crunch, daily spit paint, pixologic zbrush and 3d fan art challenge. Following stuff is fine but you don't get any network bonuses. Cgmeetup is a fantastic page to follow aswell with all the making of videos they post.

Also you will see tons more art as people feel more secure showing wips off on Facebook, me included.

Also non art related, but George takei on fb is awesome haha

As most have said linkedin is a good way to go if you dont like facebook. Like me, but facebook is a bit easier to share and stare at artwork of other artists.

Yea just be careful, I always check their page for art before adding them. But some weirdos get in, just unfriend them. I've had some right idiots haha.

I'm sure peeps have unfriended me haha, I'm quite annoying!!!

I was never a big fan of social networking sites until, like Tom, I opened up my facebook to other artists and started joining and following different groups/artists. My feed went from mundane posts I didn't care about, to awesome art and inspiration that I normally wouldn't come across. It's also great for chatting with artists that you wouldn't usually get to.
You'll get some odd friend requests or people spamming random stuff, but you can always choose for those peoples posts to not to show in your feed.

My wife has a Facebook and this was my impression too, so I always avoided it. I was/am also fairly opposed to giving up my privacy as well. However I have to say I'm kind of liking it. I have no friends yet, but there are several groups that are doing interesting things, like a 3d anatomy group, and a lunch time sketch group, both of which have good artists posting and critiquing. Pretty cool.

There is a poly count group, but I haven't been approved there yet.

LinkedIn is a bit harder to get into. I've applied to a couple groups but things move a little slower so I don't actually know how those groups function. It's a nice service already though because it scrubbed my email for contacts which will let me keep my professional contacts organized and in one place, connected to my profile/resume etc. I am a little weary of recruiters finding me through linkedin however, it's been bad enough just having a portfolio up, so well see how that goes.

Facebook is really good, I try to keep it mainly gaming related and some game art stuff there. For twitter I try to keep it more game art related both on my tweets and on the peeps that I follow.

A good way to follow good people is to check which accounts your favorite artists or people you think you identity with follow on twitter, and take it from there.

If you search facebook for poly count there is a group with 700-800 people I believe, seems to be the main one.

I prefer twitter for this, I can follow anyone I want, and got a pretty nice stream of art everyday in my twitter feed.

for this use I find the way twitter handles follwoing \ friends compared to Facebook is better.
