Back up options?

hey polycount.

I recently started freelancing again and wondered what software/hardware people are using for automated back up.

Currently I'm just transferring important files at the end of each day, but I would prefer an automated way of doing this at set intervals during the day if at all possible, perhaps with something more sturdy than a 300gb western digital portable drive.

If there is one thing I hate its repeating work...and I really dont like the idea of losing days should the worst ever happen.

Anyone got any tips or suggestions?

True, and it would be a cost effective solution, but some clients aren't keen on NDA stuff being hosted on there

I've done this before with an automated perforce setup to a networked machine; synchs up overnight. Didn't set it up myself though, someone did it for me. Cost effective though, as it's free software for this use case.

I use SyncBackPro which I got free with an extrenal hard drive and it's performed pretty well for me over the years. I believe they do a standard/ home edition which is a bit cheaper too SyncBackSE, although I've not tried it.

Yeah synback is nice, backup intervals, versioning. I was looking for a tool doing autosync like dropbox too. I'm trying syncovery but have no hindsight yet.

On the subject of storage : a friend of mine recently suggested using high quality USB thumbsticks for backup, as opposed to hard drives. I think that's a pretty smart move !

I've been using crashplan for more than a year now, recommended.
one thing about Dropbox is its not custom designed for backing up but more sharing.

I use hard drives, always. Usbs are not so good, the more you write/delete, the more they fail. And the space is a big issue. for the price of a 64GB usb pendrive i buy a 2TB HDD seagate/WD/HGST.

I recommend to have a docking station for HDDs and other storage devices if your pc tower does not have it. In my case, i don't need it, my pc tower has an e-sata docking bay.

And for more security, you always can have 2 HDDs in raid, mirror mode, or just use a free sync app between 2 HDDs.

I suggest you to forget dropbox... you should read the TOS. Cloud storaging is not the solution.

awesome information thanks guys, I have purchased a 2tb desktop external for the storage, now I'm going to have to look into the software, I'm not too familiar with version control software but I know a man that is, I honestly didnt think of just going down that route, and considering I saved the wrong tool over an iteration and lost half a day this week it might be the best solution.
