Hey guys! This is my first post ever on Polycount. I heard this is a great place to learn and get invaluable feedback and critiques on work. I am trying to improve my hand painted texturing skills and will be posting my WIPs and already finished textures to this thread.

Your feedback and critiques are GREATLY appreciated.

Not bad! It looks like you were working way zoomed in. You have great subtle detail, but if this were in a game, those details wouldn't get the resolution they deserve on the player's screen. Down the line you should add a little color variation in each plank, and maybe try some nails in there too. Test it on a flat plane, tiled about 8 times. Keep it up, this looks great.

Stick it in a game engine and see it at the angle players are going to be seeing the textures. The big thing that concerns me is that there are edge details you've painted that look great on my screen when it'covers 40% of it, but does it show up when it's only 5% of a game screen's real estate?

Snafubar7 - You are right. I was definitely working zoomed in. It has been a big problem for me. I can't seem to not zoom way in and get lost in doing really fine details. It is a habit that I really want to break.

amile duan- Thank You!

JadeEyePanda- I'll stick it in unity and check it out. I know your going to be right about the details not being visible. It was made to be a floor texture and most likely all of my hard work wouldn't be noticed unless a player was literally staring straight at the ground. Even then, it would be difficult to see.

AtticusMars & Snafubar7 - I will add more color variation to the planks. Thank you for pointing out that it looks too monochromatic. I never took that in to consideration.

Here is some sort of strange tree texture. I am trying to get my textures too look like they could fit in to World of Warcraft. This doesn't quite fit if you ask me. Feedback and crits welcomed.

Here is a tilable stone path texture I am working on now. The texture is far from finished and I think it needs more detail on the top surfaces of the stones. Could really use some pointers. Thanks in advance.

The wood looks more like leather stripes to me (I found this page that could be useful to you for the bark: http://www.zerobigsis.com/hand-painted-textures-tutorial-page.html)
The stones need some love for what concern color variation and details such as cracks. The biggest problem I see with the bricks instead is that you traced the inbetween lines in a way too straight manner. Try to do something similar but tracing the shapes freehand, the subtle color variation and the details are nice tho.

Rokugan - Thanks for the link to that interesting bark tutorial. I see what your saying about the wood. I haven't gone back and worked on the stones since posting here but maybe I will work on them some more today after finishing up this brick texture. Going back over the shapes freehand is an excellent idea. I guess there is no way stone can be cut that perfect. Please check back often, your feedback is appreciated. I plan to add many many more as often as possible.

Here is a little progress of an old stone wall texture. My plans are to use this for a wizard tower that I modeled. The above image of the shingles are going to be used for the roof.

Here I am again

For what concern roof tiles (cause these are roof tiles, right?) they look good but you need to paint some AO then you're probably set with that.
For my personal tastes I would adjust a bit the orange tiles cause I don't like the contrast with the other two variations.

in this image I did a quick color pick, the orange tiles vary from a 76% up to 80% saturation and I think that's too much, in the "new palette" I simply killed the saturation down to 55%, raised the blue from 26 to around 50 and green just a little bit.

The stone wall is looking really good! Can't wait to see it finished. You are making some sweet progress, keep practicing!

I think the new palette that you came up with is going to work much better. I appreciate you taking the time to point this out to me.

As soon as I get home from work and my rigging2 homework is turned in I will make the recommended adjustments and post the results.

Ok so I added some occlusion and did an auto contrast to brighten up the image. I like the results of it all. What do you guys think?

I still need to remove some of the saturation in the red shingles.

I know I know, you'll be hating me by now :P but it's me again!

I find that this need the same treatment as the previous one in terms of contrast. You also need some color variation, the color is kinda boring atm. I did a very quick retouch for you to give you the idea.

Actually i just did an autocontrast, then I created a new layer and picked the mid value color and created a small palette adding blue to the first, a little bit of red to the second and a purple to the third. Then with a big round soft brush i painted here and there to add the variation, set the layer style to color and turned down the opacity. Try adding a smart sharpen and it will look slightly better ^^ glad to help

Just finished this up for class.I feel like I'm improving which is always a good feeling. The texture doesn't tile very well. Adding more planks is what I should have done

Hopefully I'll be adding a stone wall of some sort later today or tomorrow.

excellent work. punch some strong highlights on the nails using the dodge tool set to highlights, and maybe add a little soft shadow the nail (make it subtle)

Ok so I still haven't fixed the wood planks yet but I figured it probably be best to complete the remaining textures for class before going back. Maybe thats silly? Anyway, this stone texture took me about 8 hours to complete. Hopefully I can get faster and keep the same quality. Crits and comments welcome of course.
