A furry question

I am kind of curious does anybody know how to get this kind of fur rendering?

only way i know how to do hair/fur etc etc is either as a texture map or using poly planes

Those characters are not in-game models, so they can use a high-res hair system, like Maya Fur. The wolf character was made by Polycount member b1ll, you could ask him how he did it.
