Hand painting textures via projection or UV?

Hi guys, I'd like to dabble in hand painting textures but wondering if there's a technique to projection paint what you're doing in Maya into photoshop or something else, I know you can do this with zbrush but for the purposes of low poly painting I'm not sure if it's the right choice?

Any advice? Thanks!

for low poly projection painting most people use either bodypaint, or 3Dcoat.
I like the interface and controlls of 3dcoat but i like how bodypaint works pretty much exactly like photoshop.
give em a try, it can be so fun to paint directly on the model.

I use 3DCoat to projection paint & live paint on my models - projection paint is a bit buggy so I typically just stick with 3DCoat's regular 3d painting, referred to as 'per-pixel painting'.

I haven't used Maya since 2007 - the 3d painting was pretty terrible back then, I don't know if it's improved at all.
