Seam weld

Hallo guys

I would like to make some welding like the image.

I have made a highpoly model and a lowpoly.

How would you manage to make those weldings?

and get them on the normal too? I have tried but it looks very bad

Should I make them high, on the highpoly and the low?

There are 2 ways I know of. Either make little squished beads and place them along the seam, or sculpt it in (nice brush for zbrush)

Do I have to do something with it to make it fit on the low? I mean after I have done the welding in zbrush the polycount is very high?

You bake a normal map from the high poly onto the low poly, and it shows up. You don't need to add any geo onto the low.

This is real easy to do in any 3D package, just extrude the geometry for your seam, and rough up the geometry with randomise/noise, apply subdivision.

If the weld is really heavily featured (like on a first person weapon) I like to add a chamfer to provide a nice surface for the details to bake onto. Also, instead of zbrushing the whole model just to get a little weld in there, I cut out a section of the highpoly around that area, do my sculpt on it, and then allow the two highpoly models to overlap. Xnormal doesn't seem to have a problem with this.

I've used the maxscript "welder", to extract a spline where two meshes meet and then exported that spline (set to renderable) as geometry and sculpted it. Also foregoes the need to sculpt the whole mesh.
