I'm looking forward to create some gems in Maya like the ones in the following image:
I understand that i might need to paint a texture in photoshop in order to apply it to the color/diffuse of a shader material. Anyway, i tried to tweak a blinn material or a Mia_material_x to get this look, but i was very unsuccessful.
I wonder if someone can give me some technical tips about materials to use, shading networks, lighting setups, or whatever in order to get what i'm looking for. I found some tutorials in the web about making realistic diamonds or ruby, but that's just not what i'm looking for. I want it to look much like the image above.
I usually use mental ray for rendering, but maya software is just fine too.

If you are using Maya there are a bunch of ways to pull it off, google would get you moving in the right direction.
