[Mudbox] Newbie help

Hey all,

So I'm starting my venture into mudbox and I am trying to find some tutorials on hard surface trick. How to make straight lines, keeping precise control over your strokes, making rings around a cylindrical object, etc.

If anyone know any decent tutorials or information to help me out, I'd appreciate it.

I have checked around quite a bit but can't seem to find much on mudbox... or specifics anywho.

Also, I am planning on making swords and various melee weapons and shields. Eventually moving towards armor. So for example, making the creases that flow around the handle of a leather wrapped hilt or something similar.

i think mudbox is a bad tool for non organic stuff. it's certainly possible to sculpt it, but it's a huge timewaster. stick to a 3d package like maya/3dmax/modo/silo.

fade1 has a point,
i think most hard surface is easier and quicker to poly model then to sculpt. so your better off to at least start your model in a poly modeller and develop all your major shapes and pieces.

then you can add detail in mudbox. the main tools you should look at are vector/displacement stamps and stencils. flatten and layer brush and custom falloffs.

essentially you combine stamps falloffs and brushes to make custom brushes for specific types of effects.

vector displacement for hard surface.

This is great information, thank you!

I wasn't entirely sure on the workflow for some hard surface in sculpting programs, I saw the result of great sculpt and just figured there was a way.

I appreciate the help, back to 3ds max I go!
