Does anybody have a preference in video capture software? I'm currently using FRAPS but am currently alarmed at how compressed the footage seems. And every now and then some shadows flicker to full blue (0,0,255) for a frame or two.

Does anybody have a worthy substitute?

    bam! http://camstudio.org/
    double bam! http://www.free-codecs.com/download/camstudio_lossless_codec.htm

You can get complete uncompressed video if you want, and if your computer is up to it.

I personally jumped on Open Broadcast Software. At first it's a sotfware for streaming content on the web, but you can use it to record mp4 file too. You can also set the compression factor. And it's free. It can record your microphone and the computer, great tool. http://obsproject.com/

Also, Fraps is made for uncompressed footages, that's why the files are so big.

zombie420: great question! I was just about to start a thread asking for advice on this very subject. At the moment I too am using Fraps and I have had no issues with it other than the fact that it can't record Unity. When I try it does not show the drop down menus and some of the floating windows.

Froyok: Your suggestion seems promising and I will check it as soon as I am able. Do you know if this will record Unity properly by chance?

    Thanks!

Sorry for the tag-on question, this is a good question to ask!

    Cheers~

Capturing Unity will not be a problem at all, I myself capture my UDK scenes without any framerate drop. :)
Notice that OBS can capture the desktop or directly a game (windowed/fullscreen).

If you want, here is a little test I did a day ago, where I'm programming and launching my UDK to test (at 1:53) : http://fr.twitch.tv/froyok/b/379946390 The quality is low because I had to stream it to twitch, but you can change the quality if you record on your hard drive.

I used to use camstudio with either their camstudio lossless codec or lagarith lossless codec. But if I'm not mistaking it had issues with recording large files. It would just cut you off after a while. Might have been fixed. Switched to a non-free (not expensive for that matter) program called Debut which I'm happy with so far. With debut I usually go for Lagarith lossless if I'm going to edit the mater afterwards, or just mp4 with highest quality if I'm just uploading it straight afterwards with no editing.

I've been using epicrewind which is buffers video in ram and allows you to save video after something has happened in game. Like I can game for a few hours, and if I do something awesome I can hit save video and that clip is the only thing i've saved to disk. works for me, pretty cool imo

Free for base version but costs money to unlock extra features,
