Hair raising question

Hi, I was hoping to find out if anyone could give some insight into how this hair effect could be created?

I'm guessing its a lot of alpha planes bunched together, but I'm still unsure how it could be done without becoming messy or going overboard with adding too many alpha cards. Any advice would be great, thanks :thumbup:

Anyone have any suggestions? Checked the polycount wiki but the techniques described didn't particularly suit this example, any help appreciated

maybe a similar technique to the one used for fur in shadow of the colossus?

I think the one neox linked is more usable for hair in general. You could quite easily just swap out a different texture to get another hairstyle (fro, buzzcut, spikes) while with the 'fur shell' method you're limited to a fairly fuzzy hair.
