[WIP] Steampunk Inspired Flamethrower

Hey all,

I have an assignment for a modelling class where I have to create a complex object. The professor suggested something like a weapon, so I decided to create a steampunk inspired flamethrower. This is only the second model that I've ever created so I'm looking for a little critique before I go any further.

The part that I'm most concerned about is the gun. Right now I don't feel that it matches the style of the tanks. I was hoping that when I was finished texturing it will look more like the style.

I think the parts on the side of the tank need to be much bigger. Right now they kind of feel like there just stuck on.

While texture will go a long way towards making the gun itself look steampunk, it's missing the 1890s riveted feel that the boiler has. It also feels very simple; Steampunk weapons have a tendency to be somewhat complex. Have you done much research into steampunk weapons? If not, you should; a great deal of designing something like this comes from taking inspiration from existing weapons. For instance. http://www.slipperybrick.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/ray-gun7.jpg The perforated cover that this weapon has could help make the body of the flamethrower a bit more visually interesting. http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/Tomothy-Mayhem/modelsheetloresFINcopy.jpg This particular image gives me ideas for a slightly more decorative triggerguard, and possibly a few dials on the gun itself to help the user keep control of his weapon. There's a lot of reference out there on steampunk weapons. Have a field day on google and see what sparks ideas.
