[UDK] Alley Environment

I have started a new environment based on a run down urban alley. The scene will be compiled in UDK for final presentation. Prop presentation is done in Marmoset. I created one prop all the way to completion in hopes that i can use it as a style guide but before i go on i would love some input.

Looking good! The only thing that really stood out is that there seems to be a bit of noise on the front face. It looks almost like grain or a bit too much on a sharpen filter.

Great prop! Do a blockout of the alleyway before doing individual stuff. Although you can scale the assets one by one, its way better to do it all with some low poly geo to establish form, and on top of that you can experiment a bit with lighting.

FractaL - Thanks!, i have a block out underway its just really ugly so id rather not post it.

It feels to me that the mortar is protruding past the bricks in your wall texture. Particularly in the painted area. I think it's the effect of shadows on the upper ridges of the bricks. Was that your intention?

Also, am I reading the model of the Aircon correctly in that the fan will be spinning? I like that detail.

There are two brick textures in that render one is cleaner(left) and the other more beat up(right) in the case of the one on the right the mortar is almost flush with the brick in contrast the the more sunken mortar on the left.

and yes you are right about the air Con my intent is to rotate the fan texture to give it life!

Ahhh I see. The difference is much more obvious on the lower 3rd of the texture. Can't wait to see this progress!

something bothering me about the holes in the tv... usually if you can breake past the front glass (and make a hole in it) the cathode would implode making the hole quite bigger...

you either have only broken glass with no holes or a HUGE hole in it... also i don't think you can actually scratch a glass like that

plus, there is some spec going on the black area on the hole. So thats doesnt help. No spec at all should affect that broken glass part.

I am finally putting together what i have for this environment. I think i have enough clutter together to start calling this close to finished. I did some quick post processing and lighting comments are encouraged.

I think the streets are very clean. They need rubbish, debris, papers, puddles, dirt, etc.

I agree with Benton. You need a lot more in there. I'm trying to think of alleyways in downtown Vancouver and usually there's a but of warping in the ground. Also, consider putting in a few back doors. That way you can have insets into the building that will make them more interesting. Could also use some pipes

the vertex blending is very haphazard and too solidified. try to make it more spread out and less caked up seeming. are you using ambient occlusion in your textures??

the lighting is very flat and boring at the moment, you need to make areas that are in deep dark shadow and pick out a few key places with lights from the lamps. Right now the lighting is the same all over

Hi, it is a nice piece you have here, But take advantage of the UDK and its Lightmaps

The lighting needs too be darker and more spooky for a dark alley way, Here is something I found real quick, May help you a bit and give you some more idea's

Personally I would make the paint be almost everywhere but where people, or the environment effect it, so have it start fading out around shoulder height, and around where the metal steps up the side allow people to get close, also around the edges where wind and the weather hits it the most, of course bits and pieces missing are good everywhere, but you might also make a peal with an alpha on some planes, to make places where its pealing off. Looking good though.
