Pulling and Stretching in 3ds Max and Mudbox

Hi all,

I have been lurking around here for a while and thought i'd see if anyone could help me out a bit.

I've been a 2d digital artist for around 6 years or so and for the past few months i've been trying to get up to speed with some 3d applications beyond basic models to be used in some of my 2d work. Unfortunately, I have this one problem that rears it's ugly head over an over: pulling and stretching in both 3ds Max 2012 and Mudbox 2012 whenever I try to model something with both smooth and hard edges.

To demonstrate, I've made a low poly model of a VW beetle body. I've tried champfering (around the windows and where the mirror connects to the body), and added creased edges to create the division between the wheel well and the body. You can see the problems in these screen grabs.

Capture1: shows the low poly model in with wireframe 3ds max
Capture2: shows a turbosmoothed version of the model with wireframe
Capture3: shows the turbosmoothed version without wireframe. Note the pulling where the bump over the wheel meets the body.
Capture4: shows the same stretching, but on the back bump of the model
Capture5: shows pulling and texture distortion of the same car model in mudbox
Capture6: shows the same stretching around the door handel where there was no creased edges or champfered edges
Capture7: shows the same problem around the light on top of the wheel bump.

I'm probably just making some amateurish mistakes, but if anyone has some insight that might point me in the right direction to solve this re-occurring problem, I would really appreciate it.

    hi daruma...
i see two problems here... first is that mudbox isnt smoothing the uvs by default and the second is that you need more edges to hold the uvs in place... your car looks more like an lowpoly game char than a smoothable one... you shoudl insert more edges to define some harder edges...

    Hi Oglu,

    Thanks for the tips!

The attachment explained a lot about what my issues with pulling in Mudbox are. I'm kind of surprised that "smooth UVS" isn't the default option as I don't see why you would ever want pulling. I think you're right about the car model needing more edges too.

I really appreciate you taking some time to answer my questions.
