I have just noticed something odd as I when I make a patch with the pen tool,
then turn it in to a selection I get horrible jaggies.
If i turn it in to a layer mask or clipping path, then I get a nice clean mask.
Is this a bug as I prefer to just turn the path to a selection on the whole.
Document size is quite small 512 x512 but yeah its a bit annoying.

Hrmmmm... is your magic wand set to anti-alias? You selections might come out aliased if that isn't checked. If that didn't do it... maybe a 1pix feather on the selection before you fill it could work.
Remember vector masks will always look cleaner due to them being live vectors and not actually rastrised. When working with a small document rasterising vector graphics will always make it pretty pixelated.

it's working fine now. not sure what setting was causing this.

I mean the jagginess was 'really' pronounced, like staircase jagged
