Final uni project: Realistic bust [WIP]

Hey guys, this is my final project of university. I have to do a research project and make a realistic character bust and get it in UDK. This is the sculpt so far, big WIP as it is. Coming along though. Having most trouble with the brow line.

Middle age Caucasian male...Looking at (but not basing on) Harrison Ford/Nathan Drake/Sully sort of characters. C&C more than welcome.

You're off to a good start but I think you can work on several areas. The first thing that stands out is the curvature of the face in profile view. The bottom half of the face (under the nose) is angle outwards when it should be either straight or angled inwards. Another thing you can work on is around the eye area. To me it seems you could build up the cheek bones. I'd recommend looking at some ecorche references to get more of an understanding of the underlying structure of the face.

Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate them. I've made some adjustments. I find the face to be a very delicate thing and even minor tweaks can make it look different. I hope I'm edging towards something that is really good. Hoping to start adding the finer details soon once the proportions/shapes are right. Thanks again.

Good start, the sculpt looks quite blotchy although could be the render..

What kind of texture maps do you plan to use and what type of skin shader?

Yeah, still getting shape and form right, then will smooth it over and add finer detail. I'm gonna use a standard diffuse, spec, some blurred normals and I plan on editing the SSS shader released by Miguel A Santiago Jr. http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/732232-DT3D-UDK-Skin-Shader

Cool! Ben Mathis just done a cool tutorial on eye shaders.. Wouldn't be hard to replicate it for unreal 3

Not a bad start, however I would revisit your proportions a little more before going forward with more detailing. The eyes are too high up on the head they should be around half way. I would also further investigate some of the anatomical under linings you are hinting at, like the proper placement of the sternomastoid on the neck, and your hint of the zygomatic arch in between the ears and the eyes.

It's slowly getting there. I've made the suggested adjustments. Looks much better now I think. I'm using Scott Spencer's digital sculpting human anatomy book. It's been like my bible the past couple years, so if the face looks a little overly muscular, that might be why.

@Chimp This is probably gonna be a newbie question but...you mean turn on perspective distortion? I've never sculpted with it on. Am I in trouble?

Saw the error of my ways and switched to perspective. I know it's probably not looking like much, but I tried to spend a while getting better form. Will need to start doing the first detail pass tomorrow.

I think your head is far too wide. The width of the face looks okay to me but if you compare it with this pic of a human male skull you can see the difference.

Also the neck is far too thick in the side view. It seems you are going for a more muscular physique but even they don't have necks like this. When the muscles of the neck get muscular they tend to gain in width in the front view. Check out these pictures of UFC fighter Dennis Siver. Even though he has a very muscular neck (as seen here) from a lateral view it doesn't appear all that bulky.

Also check the form of your trapezius muscle. In your sculpt it looks like there is another bump between the two muscles. As you can see here there isn't any such bump except the little bumps of the vertebraes.

Twister3 - thanks very much for your obsevations. You're totally right, my proportions are way off. I've been lining up screen shots of my sculpt with a sculpt from Uncharted 2 and it's looking much better.
This is all in the perspective view this time

Hope to get the sculpt finished by tomorrow. I need to really..

Alrighty, been spending some quality time on this guy. I hope you like it, I think it's pretty good, but as always, please let me know where you think it could be improved

I didn't really know what age I was aiming for, but I was using older guys as reference. I just kept sculpting and he got older and older haha. I like it though, gives him more character. Need to decide on a hair style still too. I'm thinking maybe the George..? What do you think?

I'll make some final tweaks if necessary then I'm going down to retop and unwrap town.

Photo textured, retop, unwrap ( it's meant to be 13k tris), basic first textures, import to engine. Think it's looking ok so far. Gonna clean the textures up tomorrow...or later today. Start looking at getting hair on it. Little scared. But excited.

Tomorrow is the deadline. This will have to do for now...
I know there are a ton of faults and I could improve in a million areas but...maybe I'll come back to it? Maybe? I wanna work on something else, that I actually wanna do.

Originally I did try and use that solution but it made the eye flip out in UDK. Because in order to make the outer layer of the eyes transparent, I needed to use a BLEND_translucent shader, it meant that the eyes went invisible when the hair behind it was in view (also a BLEND_translucent shader). If you viewed the eyes from the side, with no hair behind it they were visible. Also, the outer layer, that was transparent and meant to only have specularity didn't show up. I did try but ultimately couldn't get it working how it was meant to in engine. Put that all in the write up I Suppose...but still a shame.

I imagine a solution could be devised byusing a combination of fresnel, DOTproduct and the emissive channel, but time's up.

Quickly threw something together. It's just a static mesh overlayed on the eyes to see if it would work. I think with some tweaking it would but it's too late to export the skeletal from max again with new IDs. Also, I'd have to do all the manual alpha sorting again for the hair.
