I wanted to ask if there is a way one can grab a viewport render of my model with the safe frame only in Maya.I know of the print Screen and paste in Photoshop workflow but that seems to grab the whole screen, including the UI of the Maya app.Is there a way to grab only the viewport and paste to photoshop?Unless I use the hardware or hardware 2.0 to render?

Thanks.

So if I wanted a viewport grab of say 1280 x720 px.What size of image should I have in PS,for me to get that size when I crop?

1280 x 720, paste the screencap in there, it'll go way over the edges, then you just move it until what you want fits within the 720 picture.

ctrl+space to maximize the viewport size by hiding several UI parts of Maya. You can also remove pretty much all HUD components, grids, etc, through the "Show" menu in the viewport.

Also, why not render with Maya Hardware? You can combine that with resolution gate on your camera to get pretty much exact the same view as in the viewport, but at your desired resolution and no other crap in the picture. You also get an alpha channel this way to easier mask your object(s).

    Thanks,man.Will try it out.

I have considered using the hardware renderer or 2.0 renderer in Maya, but the model looks slightly better in the viewport than with the renderers. If I can get a good high res viewport grab, then I will have to use the renderers.

I'm trying to render the viewport, too. I'm using Viewport 2.0 with the Hardware Renderer. I'd like to render the geometry and shaders as they look in the view port and have an alpha in the TGA output to mask out the blank grey background. But, the geometry is coming out with a black silhouette. and there is no alpha channel in the TGA.

Go to preference settings>color settings>3d views in Maya and make the bluish gradient background in the viewport totally black.
Go to Windows> playblast, click the box next to it.

To render out ur viewport scene, set the following-
Time range-start/end-put the same number in both boxes if u want to render a particular frame.
    Format-qt,
    Encoding- to jpg,png,or tga.
save to file -browse to where u wanna save the file.
    click playblast.
