Make the material two sided in the material editor and not in Max?

Enable 2 sided in the material.
Secondly, is the material set to Opaque?
Select the Light source (or put up another one which is not Dominant) and see if it casts shadows.
For some reason, UDK will only cast Dynamic shadows during run-time and not in the viewport of the editor, UNLESS you select a light to preview it.
If it's about baking the lightmap, decrease shadow rez for BSP and increase it for a static mesh.
