Cant use the Insert Edge Loop Tool, when Create Polygon Tool was used

Hi Dudez!
Have some troubles with my Polygon that i made with Mayas Create Polygon Tool.
I Cant use the Insert Edge Loop Tool to add Details to the weapon.
I Want to add some edges on the main side of the weapon to smooth that weapon.
Without Edges smoothing destroys the weapon.
What im doin wrong?

Divide it up then try again
I dont want the Edge on this Side, i must it have on the Side!
But it will not!
This Edges (Red) are important, to smooth that correct.
But on this side its not possible to insert an edge loop
I have tryed to quartered with the cut tool.
but that dont help
You cant use the insert edge loop tool properly on a face that has more than 4 vertex's
it looks terrible.
i need that lines like in the picture
Back in my Maya learning days i never heard ANYONE mention an Ngon or to split up the Ngon into Quads they just did stuff and expected me to understand which eventually lead to my down fall since i started using the tool and never understood why my models triangulated horribly in a game engine. Aside from about 20 good tutorials tops the rest is spam trash and people looking for views
What your doing wrong is your trying to use the insert edge loop on a face that cant be split because it has no quads to be split
The Ngon is that huge face on the side of your gun model with no edges
3rd time saying this But Split up the Ngon then try again
This guy is using the create polygon tool and models his gun to the end.
Unless your trying to use the Insert edge loop tool to do a split?
Use the Split polygon tool or Interactive Split polygon tool
ALSO that guy can use the Tool BECAUSE hes working With QUADS NOOOOT a Big ngon

A face that big will cause to many problems
So the Smoothing dont looks nice at this point:
I have selected the Vertexes and then clicked merge vertices.
But he dont want to merge them correct hm...
