What is best Display Driver for 3Ds Max?

Like the title says. What is the best Display Drivers to use in 3Ds max? I find myself using OpenGL but it is recommending me to use Nitrous. When i use Nitrous my View port LAGS, were as when i use OpenGL it works PERFECT. I am just curiouse as to why there are these 3 options?

I'm surprised, Nitrous is blisteringly fast for me.

OpenGL and DX have always been an issue for me - for years OGL was faster and more stable, but the DX viewport won for the last 4 or 5 revisions.

For me....

Nitrous on new machines with new nvidia card, dx on older machines with older nvidia cards and whatever actually manages to function on machines with ATI cards.

The material editor causes lag during animation so worth closing that when you're not using it.

only d3d works great with 3rd party shaders, so it's my only choice

Nitrous got performance and visual improvements ,but really need a decent video card ..

hmm that is def wired Nitrous even lags with an empty scene... I have a Nvidia GeForce GT240 Graphics card but its an Asus make? dunno if that has anything to do with it?

Are you sure you're running 2012 with the latest service pack?

yeah, i am using 3Ds max with service pack 1 and i have a 3ds max 2012 HF1? dunno what it is but if i remember correctly i got it from Autodesk website

I downloaded the Service pack 2 and the Hot Fix 2 and still Nitrous is lagging, however it is lagging less than before. Open GL is still better.

Nitrous for HP modeling, DirectX if you're wanting to view realtime shaders. It seems bullshit, since Nitrous is supposedly DirectX. They should make shaders compatible with that viewport driver, so I don't have to keep switching between modeling/texturing

Yeah it's weird, at home Nitrous is an un-useable lagfest, at work it works well. It really does look nice with the adaptive AA and so, but for it to be of any use to game artists they should allow custom shaders.

you might hit with this bug too.... it's really weird. and autodesk didn't fix it yet.( do they?)

i use nitrous now
it seems to work the best plus the realistic preview is just great.

but as you guys mentioned it has some bugs

but you usually see that per computer setup or video card.

make sure to install the hotfixes that fixed a lot of problems.

I usuallly just work on a model in nitrous until a bug hapens then I try opengl as my backup

I've setup 2 shortcuts with different commandline switches to change between drivers quickly. adding -vd will launch direct3d drivers, -vx will launch nitrous

Alpha sorting doesn't work at all with Nitrous, at least on my end. Otherwise it's great but working with stuff like foliage is rather hard when everything is translucent
