3DS Max Vertex Shading

I just ran across Vertex Shading as an AO technique and I think im gonna give it a go in my new scene. Its 3am at the moment and I have looked on the wiki here and other places and taken in as much info as my eyes can process right now.
One thing that confuses me is are vertex colours stored inside the mesh file itself or do I have to bake them out to a texture map like anythign else.
Like most things that puzzle me im sure this is a simple yes or no scenario but jus to make sure.
If they are stored in the model file is there a specific file type I need to use to export the mesh to UDK? I checked .Obj and .FBX but neither of them mention vertex colour so either its the wrong format or they are stored automatically.
