This is my first gun that I will be attempting to do low poly on. I still have quite a bit of high poly modeling to first, but I did want to post what I have so far, to see if anyone had any comments.

also I should mention the lines on the grip and pump will be close to the last thing I do

It would be nice to see your reference to compare your gun too. I really like the shapes and I think the model looks really nice. My one crit is that some of the edges, especially around the trigger guard are looking to sharp. Looks great otherwise though, keep going.

To me it looks like you really nailed the shape! I've never seen this gun before, it's really interesting. Kudos for not picking a generic shotgun. Keep going, I look forward to seeing this advance

does the gun really have all those overlapping parts above the trigger guard?
if so, what purpose do they serve, just to look different than other shotties?

Honestly, I have no idea why it has those overlapping parts, but they are there on the real one.

Looking good Bilabong, it would be great to see all that wicked embossing detailing. I guess you could do it in the highpoly but it could be done with editing the normal map with NDO or something, not sure though, someone else may have a better idea if that would work.

Thanks Trevor, Yeah I haven't decided if I'm going to actually model those embossed lines in there or just make some floating geometry for the normal map.

Sorry for the long delays in the update, but I only get about 2 hrs. a night and the weekends to work on it. Anyways. Here she is so far.

I am procrastinating the hell out of doing the grip lines for the pump:)

Nice progress, mate

The only real crits. I have at this stage are that I think it would be beneficial if increased the side of some of the details that you have.

The smallest detail you can capture is 1px, so if you have objects that are smaller than that on your bake, the details are not going to be captured correctly and will just turn into noise.

This is especially true for the diamond grips etc.
You would be better making these maybe 5 or 6 times their current size as they will bake much better. (maybe 3 high per section)

The horizontal shapes under the barrel would be better at maybe 2x the current height
I know its not 100% strict to the ref, but it will read better in the end

i think your grooves and cuts are too soft overall. i wont bake very good

u should go deeper and more exaggerate just alittle bit more than the ref

now its softer than the ref

Thanks so much for giving me some feedback Lonewolf. Would you mind explaining a little more about what you mean? I was told that my edges should be softer than the actual reference, for good baking.

This is the first model Ive ever done that I plan to low poly, so I want to make sure I do this right.

I modeled the base mesh and then imported that into Mudbox. I created the text on the bottom of the shells in PS and made a stencil out of it for MB,for the grooves, I did the same exact thing. created a map in PS and used that in MB

What lonewolf is saying is that your grooves that you modeled overall just need to be deeper. When you cast a normal map details have a tendency to flatten out... and since a lot of your details are already so shallow they are not going to bake very well.

I think ridges you sculpted on your bullets, personally, were a waste of time because they are so small that they didn't really need to be sculpted (they are probably going to disappear when you cast unless you cast at a ridiculous size) and you could have just added them in the textures which would have taken you probably 5 min.

Just as you said your edges should be softer than the reference. At the moment most of your edges are EXTREMELY sharp. lol Most of them are not going to cast very well. Really loosen up on all your edges and you details will cast a lot better.

Don't get me wrong... your modeling is superb but for a highpoly that you are going to cast it needs a lot of tweaking.

Really liking this so far. What the others said about needing to exaggerate the edges and insets for baking purposes are true though. Sort those out and it'll rock!

u can use that too even though i wouldnt just make it softer cause i dont like make stuff that suppose to be flat, round, i would make it thicker and then abit softer

HP - looks awesome, thumbs up!
Unwraps look pretty messy and need to be more efficient (5% waste TOPS!). Tile identical pieces on top of each other, only leave unique UVs for unique damage/textures.

-I would suggest you make it so the coiled wire coming from the flashlight has a bit more definition in the geometry so it affects the silhouette better. Also the inset in the stock really could use some geometry as even with a normal map it's too flat from extreme angles and it's too much of a big feature not to warrant any geometry.
-I can see what looks like tiling on the barrel.
-I fould two good reference pictures that could be helpful.
-Also I worked on a km2000 knife a while ago that had similar materials on the grip.
