Help with color on my chainsaw
Hey guys, I could really use some help. I got this concept even though it was one color, modeled it high and low, but now when I'm going to texture it, I cant figure out a color scheme that works. I tried coloring a render of my high poly, but it doesn't seem right. I was hoping someone could give me any kind of direction to take this. I could using a color scheme, a rough paint-over, anything really. I need some kind of direction. Any help would be appreciated.

Replies
Do 3-7 paintovers, all with different color schemes and give yourself some options. Experiment with really wacky combos as well as realistic ones to give it a nice spread. I'm sure the community would love to give their opinion if they had some options to choose from.
you did a good job with the model, it looks like you read the concept well considering it's a bit hazy in certain areas. I think it may be beneficial for you to do a paintover yourself and go through many different color schemes until you find one you're pleased with. If you're persistent I'm sure you'll find something you like.
Here's a paint over I did in photoshop, it may not be the best but hopefully you find it useful in some way. If not, I'm sure a more talented member can give you some suggestions!

I don't think my color/materials are anywhere close to perfect but I didn't want to spend a bunch of time tweaking your render to look like plastic/metal/etc.
btw i'm a sucker for glowy bits
that's kind of a sickly yellow, I'd move it a bit more towards orange/red, right now it's got some blue/green in it.
I'd do the fatter, more angled caution stripes that seven used versus yours, but I like your most recent color comp (probably cuz it's based on mine

Also, I see no reason why the rear shape of any of the teeth should change. <- )\)\)\ <- is the direction in which the saw moves, right? In that case only the ) should deform, and the \ should be relatively unharmed.
Lastly, that ring near the trigger seems like a huge snagging risk (it looks like it would get stuck in the teeth).
As for color, I'm thinking it might be cool to combine Death-a-Matron's version with some stickering/permanent-marker/graffiti to make it look a bit like a hornet. You could nickname it the buzzsaw (yes I know that's the round one).
I didn't really get a chance to make all the scratches in most edges, but Im pretty sure u get the idea. Golden, dark reds, dark blues and black are pretty much it. Also, if the saw blades were wasted metal it would add to the different shapes you got there.
I know adding the dry blood as a texture is kinda dumb, but if you're going to present it as a piece of work, why not?
and hopefully you find that the pink idea is a waste of time, unless you're into that stuff...
using something like this can really help if your struggling...
sevens stripes were better aswell as they were thicker and suited the detail frequency already in the model
biggest thing i would do is make the painted sections/areas/scratches stick out materially...ATM your just dying metal...this isnt very common...you want it to look like paint and that needs a more plastic specular
P.S. I'm also glad you got rid of the blood- it was a bit too tacked on. As well as the glow and lettering :P
