[3ds max] Masking

I've always liked zbrush's ability to mask a tool and have a falloff to tweak and alter proportions quickly. Recently i've been playing around with max 2012's shift/rotate/scale 'brushes' in the graphite modeling tools and have found it really useful for making quick and easy edits to a model. However if you want to limit it's effects to certain areas of the mesh the only surefire way of doing this is hiding the rest of the mesh and then making your tweaks but this means you have no visual feedback of how the edit looks combined with the rest of the hidden mesh.

Unless there's a way to do this i've missed is there a script to mask the mesh similar to zbrush and if not how hard would it be to script something like this if indeed it's possible?
