Begin protracted training montage

Ok guys, I really need the practice so I'm going to be doing a head sculpt per diem until the start of Siggraph. Unfortunately I can't really work weekends because I wont have access to a good computer
anyway here is the first sculpt this week, i decide to go with something low key and relaxing so it's an ork

It's supposed to be in the style of Paul Bonners old Space Orks from warhammer 40k

practically, what do you do with head sculpts? turn them into meshes for maya/max and use them as highpoly refs for normal maps?

no hair today I feel like I've failed myself, also females are hard, more practice is required

A lot of your eyes look very similar (latest one is better), and so far the majority of your heads are stylized. I don't know if this is your intention, but the main thing that will help you move to the next step is to use more reference. If you're doing these from your head it is not enough right now. Also, you might want to try making a new basemesh, as I can see features that are repeating through all your heads. Either that or adjusting your basemesh better at lower stages of the sculpting.

Your heads tend to be too tall or miss too much of the back of the skull.

If you look at this you'll see that proportion wise the skull is about as deep as it is tall. And remember that hair often adds more volume. Also, your necks seem a little thin.

Are you working from reference by the way? There is nothing's wrong with stylization or exaggeration, but I feel that your more cartoony heads are somewhat uninformed.

ah ha! this is exactly what I was hoping for when I started this endeavor! thanks guys.
I'll admit I need to work on using reference more, I should be treating this as a studying experience.

no sculpt for today, I've been doing research, I'll have something for you tomorrow.

whoa! proper use of reference is like steroids for art.

it's not perfect I know but it is a noticeable improvement from Tuesday

@jungsik: from a basemesh, i don't trust myself to start from a cube.
