  I haven't tested it out much myself, but a coworker of mine finds that baking normal maps in 3dCoat seems to be more forgiving in tight problem areas without having to use cages and the like. I don't know about the quality of the output given the rather limited options, but I wouldn't dismiss it completely.

  OK, maybe I'll try to do a few tests. I did look at the options and compared to xNormal or Topogun baking options is very limited.
