I picked up an iPad 2 yesterday - I never owned an iphone or any other kind of smart phone so the world of apps has passed me by until now, got any recommendations?

I can also recommend iA Writer. Built by a buddy here in Tokyo.
Obviously it would be 10 times better if one could just drop the zip file and read from there like on any tablet PC but this is impossible on the ipad...
Open all JPEGs in Preview and highlight them all in the sidebar, File>Print Selected, make sure your page range covers all your pages and click 'Save PDF'.
I'm using Snow Leopard and not sure if it works in earlier versions. I'm sure there was an Automator macro to do something similar though.
Then add it to your 'Books' on iTunes. Then sync your iPad et voila, PDF ebook which you can read in iBooks. No more using iPhoto for your books!
So here's another cool app recommendation from me, FL Studio Mobile is out and is currently at the introductory price of $19.99 - I like it better than garage band because I'm more familiar with the FL Studio layout. It's a little limited - like no VSTs, only one fx automation track and no ability to record your own samples but I still enjoy it. I'll try and upload a song soon.
There's no step sequencer like FL which sucks a bit, or native iPad support yet (although if you're Jailbroken you can run the 2x res plugin thing which will emulate native res) but it seems the perfect combo of ease of use and overall power.
EDIT: It has a sampler too.
i use Zenbe lists all the time with my wife, share an account and we update shopping lists as we need to, and it syncs between all i- devices (when using the same login to the website). She updates on her phone, i check phone or ipad and get stuff @ store on way home from office
for note taking, i use Note Taker HD. Its the best one i found, has a zoom-writing section which allows for more accurate lettering & writing.

-just a stylus where you can actually see where you are drawing. Really nice product if a bit of a weird solution. It has a nice weight and feels like a pen. Works well in sketchbook as long as I don't draw too quickly. That's more sketchbook on the first gen ipad though.
