  Do you mean decals?
  
  I've been struggling with decals for a while too. Anything that is not emissive and requires shading acts really weird - sometimes they shade just fine, often they have some lighting artifacts and sometimes they end up just black.

  no. i mean when you paint grass or something onto terrain. The mesh that gets painted on doesnt get shaded.

  Hmm, odd. My decolayer objects do cast shadows. You sure you don't mean foliage?

  nope. foliage was removed in my build of udk.
  
  i'll check in the layer properties. maybe there's a box I forgot to check...
