After speaking to some artists about my current work, It has been agreed that my current work is just too, normal. I have spent the last few days devising an idea for something unusual.
The environment will be based around a mad musician's "laboratory". I want to follow some of my favorite art styles.. Tim Burton, and the best game ever, The Neverhood. It will be somewhat dark and eerie, with a slight goofy feel.
Here are some pictures of the art styles i plan to use, if you don't know them.
Here is a sketch, done by Illka Siik aka Sixton, for an idea of the layout. He helped me push for this idea.
Lastly a quick test model of the main stain-glass window. Not by any means final. Just finding the style I want.
Let me know if you have any suggestions before I begin blocking this thing out.

interesting style , love the sketch .. and just try to put more props to you scene
keep it up
Will you be giving the environment a clay look or are you just trying to accomplish the general artistic direction of both styles?
Pay attention to your spec maps and glossiness when making your texture maps to separate your materials.
Okay, thoughtful stuff is out of the way. I love this style and Tim Burton's stop-motion work! Really looking forward to see where you take this.
ayoub44- Oh there will be many more props. I am sketching out a bunch of different ideas to fill the scene, and of course a focal point.
Skibur- Yes, I loved it!
LateWhiteRabbit- I am not too sure if I will push an actual clay look.. but more the abstract characteristic of the game :poly141: still playing around, so we will see.
Its a beetle stool :poly142:
Love the style and I can't wait to see the finished piece!
OK last test.. time to start blocking this thing out
Thought of this zig zag design staircase while I was in the shower. Just so you know.
There will be a rack of test tubes in the scene shaped as musical notes on a staff. I made an iridescent glass material for the test tubes tonight. cube map is temporary. hope you enjoy it
edit: oh and i just played through the neverhood again, after about 6 years.. did not get any easier, but just as fun as i remember
Ive decided to pull more of the Neverhood look into things. Quick material test. I'm very happy with the results so far.
NathanBarrett- Thanks. Technically speaking, its very simple. Uses 1 normal map that is added up for different levels of detail. Then a diffuse that is interpreted a little for slight color differentiations. Main color is just a Constant3.
Axios- Me too haha. Started playing it again today for some more inspiration.
Did a quick paintover to see how colors look together. Seems pretty good to me. Any crits would be greatly appreciated.
Will just go with red for now.
Adding onto my clay shader. Got some vertex tessellation painting going on! Uses the texture height map, and a base of black for no height. Allows me to break up some areas, and stomp down excessive noise.
Little video for the night showing some of my shader progression.

current setup
Although it's not a very established technology yet in games. I think it will become more prominent in the near future. Especially with the support Epic is putting into it thus far. They made it simple compared to older methods!
Loving the overall visual style here.
Ged- I listen to the soundtrack all the time Ill definitely use something like that for a video once its all done.
indian_boy- Thanks
Baked this lp. These props will not be made out of clay for the most part. Im trying to do some very simplistic stuff to contrast the walls and noise.
Will allow me to design some quirky drawings on the walls, and paint larger clay areas to not look so flat.

Its a little jagged atm due to a lower res height map.
Planning on taking this one step further. By adding some vertex displacement painting. Will be pretty close to zbrush.. not really but it should be interesting!
