Can anyone shed some light onto why my object goes black when having the viewport show direct x active on when a material is applied? I think i had a solution before but cant recall what i did to fix it. Thanks..

Hi Reverenddevil.
I had these issues on a laptop running max 2011 32 bit (no problems on the workstation 64 bit version). Try changing to software rendering in the driver configuration under viewport in the general preferences. The display isnt as luxurious but it will also speed thing up when orbiting.

change your scene to use default lights.. should work. only downside is then you will have to render to see results.
