Problems with Blender; connecting curves

Hello again. I've been making a TF2 hat(which is almost done), but at this moment(like, has been the whole day now $:\$ ). I've been trying to connect 9 bezier curves with each other to make the Linux penguin's mouth(yup, TF2 Linux penguin hat). The farthest I got was nowhere D=
I've been googling around some too, with no success. That's why I am asking here, since I will probably get some suggestions of which one might work.

I am using the newest version of blender available.

I'm not sure what your problem is, maybe a screenshot could help me more, anyway, one thing I had a lot of problem was how to create a surface from curves and the answer I found was here, you could try this, if it's your problem:

The problem probably is in how I placed the curves, it seems, because I did everything that was said in that page, and only got a misformed wireframe. I'll try to remake the mouth and I'll see how it'll do.

A screenshot of your scene would be most helpful. Also, what kind of curves are you using, bezier or NURBS? If you're using bezier curves I don't think you can connect them the same way as shown in the tutorial to make a surface. If you're using NURBS, that's one part where Blender is rather lacking in functions and functionality. You might want to try regular subdivision modelling?

This should be pretty easy to do and only takes a few steps.
The steps are the same in 2.49b and 2.5
