I just had a chance to play this, after waiting a LONG time for a new Metroid game... I love me some Metroid, huge fan, with Super Metroid getting beat pretty much every year without fail...

But my word, this... This is a joke...

I can't even begin to show how disappointed I am. Its probably the worst show of UI design, voice over work and gameplay I've seen in a many years, I mean even worse than some free games... A few of the basic "FLAWS":

* Characters in cinematics are asleep. At least, they sound it. They never once change tone or stop to breath they just keep going on and on and its so boring and oh my a metroid and oh im sorry and lets try shooting and oh wow... ZZZZZZzzzz.....

* The control is just terrible. I mean simply mind boggling... I was ok with it at first in the previews, I thought hey its not gonna be that bad, its a 3d side scroller... But erm... Its not. Its a third person game (As in, you move in 3d, all directions, not just side to side). Let me put it as simple as I can. To shoot an enemy you have to be looking at them, when the auto aim takes over… But you cant look towards an enemy unless your running at them… And by the time you’ve got yourself into the right position, its already moved. So, you end up running towards them, spamming the button, and then walking backwards, to do it all over again… The controls are so sloppy its unreal. Going into first person mode is even worse, you have to STAND STILL just to use it, and then because theres no buttons left to use, everything is basic “hover over the enemy and wait 3 seconds” to work… So, it leaves you wide open to attack, from anything… If your facing any more than one enemy, you will take a LOT of damage.

* The gameplay is dire… I mean, this isn’t Metroid. You removed everything that made it Metroid. I shouldn’t have the ability to recharge my damn super bombs whenever I feel like it… That’s just stupid. Theres no exploration, loads of combat… Its just weak…

On the plus side, it IS a nice looking game, and the cinematics, even though boring as hell a lot of the time, ARE stunning. But my god, this game has really let me down so much… Was it really that hard to either A) Make Metroid Prime 4 B) Make a 3D Super Metroid style game or C) just let me plug the bloody Nunchuck in… I mean seriously, a lot of issues would be fixed with the controls if they just let you use the Nunchuck…

*breathes*

Wow… That leaves the new Donkey Kong Country game, and that’s it then, my Wii wont even get a look in unless I happen to be having a drunken party…

But Team Ninja missed the point, honestly… They dropped the ball so far… Its just… Wrong…

After reading a few reviews, it seems like my initial fears were confirmed. Sad too, as I was gonna get a Wii for this game.

I haven't played it, but my initial impressions upon its announce were that it would be more akin to Ninja Gaiden than Metroid or Metroid Prime in terms of gameplay? How accurate would that assessment be? Essentially, I heard it wasn't developed by Retro so I lost interest.

Sucks to hear, was also looking forward to this, I think I'll still rent it eventually to try it out.

Other than the things you mentioned with the cinematics and such, what's the overall story like?

I heard it was a sequel to super metroid, which is one of my all-time favorites for the series.

Yeah pretty much... Its defo a third person shooter game really... As soon as I was told to shoot an enemy then jump on its head to do a special move back in the training mission, I just groaned...

    Bring back Retro, defo...

I'm still hoping we get some fantastic 2d style metroid on the 3DS. Shadow Run style with classic gameplay, none of this new "Hurr durr we have to make it simples!" bollocks...

The story is... Well lets put it this way, its Japanese... Its thread bare, with lots of effort into areas that nobody cares about, then its none existent for an hour, then its back to talking about past events, then it skips back to the present, then its... Its all over the place... Doesn't help that its a classic OHHHHHHHHHHHH... HIIIIIIII.... AYYYYYYYY!!! translation either, and that everybody is on Meth.

Its a sequel to Super Metroid in one single way... its set directly after it.... It doesn't really share much of anything with it, at all. You get a few minutes of cinematic at the start, then its gone. It could just as easily be any time in the franchise.

Well, at least the new Donkey Kong has Retro behind it.
