yeah it's fantastic but I think the brains at Sega must've thought of doing something like this already but there must be reasons as to why they don't want to do it.
Hey Odium you seem to be very passionate about it why don't you email them the videoI'm sure they will be itching to see it. ¬_¬
The guy that made it is some VFX dude that works on rock videos or something.
To be honest, I think the last time SEGA actually "got" what fans want from Sonic was back when when they just released their last console... Remember that even the new game, which isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination and could just as eeasily be a Wii game in HD, wasn't even MADE by Sonic Team... So yeah...
Besides, this screams what should be done to the franchise, and I can imagine playing a game like this with all the new 3d techno bollocks that seems to be the new bloom would be quite stunning indeed.
But no... Just remake Sonic 1 bosses, make Sonic walk like a twat and give him a homing attack, that will work...
But I think you might be missing the bigger picture it's like with Street fighter they could have easily jumped back to the Alpha days making anime side scrolling beat em up's which worked. But Capcom ventured forward with crappy 3d iteration after crappy iteration and guess what they finally got it right with Street fighter 4 albeit when they went back to a kinda camera fixed side scrolling style.
But the point is I think Sega know what they are doing just give it time I suppose.
If it is the score isn't changing... possibly not hooked up yet but it looks highly scripted, as if it was just animated or in demo mode. It would be awesome if it was playable but I think they've screwed sonic over enough in the last few decades that no one really cares... sad to it looks pretty awesome.
Part of the original Mushroom Hill zone in Sonic and Knuckles was brown like this so it's not just that standard brown desaturated look that a lot of games use.
@zipfinator: i think it was a mis-timed troll bro.
yeah this looks sweet. shame about that little ray marching section, totally threw me out of the video : ( but made me think it would have looked sweet a little more broad throughout the level.
regardless looks real sweet, and nicely obtainable through UDK.
I need to not post stuff in the awesomeness thread anymore, no one said a thing when it was posted it in there :P
awesomeness thread updates too quickly for any kind of discussion, and actually a lot of the things in there aren't that awesome so I've stopped clicking on it... I'm sure I'm not the only one
Plus everyone knows the real awesome stuff ends up with their own thread anyway!
If you guys are talking about SEGA should stick to their classic version than improvising.
I dont see anything wrong with this...better than the previous version of Sonic where you couldnt touch your controller while the sonic is in mega speed mode.
I dont know about other fans but I do love their classic environment and game style than 3der version. So sticking to that while one creates 3d environment that is a bit dull and not too happy.
tell them to make a Jet Grind Radio MMO where you can form your own gang with your buddys and tag up neo tokyo.
That'd be hot.
(I'm not very big on sonic)
Lol at Sonic 4. The gameplay looks identical to the sections of sonic 1,2,3 where you are underwater....and you move really slow...and its really frustrating...and you just want to get to the surface...
Except its like that all the time.
Anyways, The mushroom hill video is an exact representation of what I wish sonic has been doing all along. That franchise has been ran into the ground.
This is fan made, it's a composed video / animation, not a game, unfortunately! But it is pretty awesome, and Sega really need to open it's eyes, this is the logical step they should have taken years ago.
That comic is dead on. I get that Sega must want to mix it up a little and try new things with the IP... but Sonic games have been terrible for years and years, they should get back to their strengths.
Why...? Everybody knew it was a movie and not gameplay... The point is, the target render is perfectly possible on todays hardware, hell even the Wii could manage it.
I dont like a lot of the art choices in that latest video. The gameplay is spot on, but their heavy use of post fx and visual noise in the foreground make it hard to read. They should dial back the detail a bit, especially on the main terrain tiles.
Sonic was good when he kept his mouth shut. When he got a million forest friends and a "personality" he became the shittiest videogame character ever bar Bubsy, imo.
Actually by far the biggest flaw in the new update to Sonic 4 isnt so much the graphics (which are sub par but hey ho lets ignore that) its the fact the center of gravity on Sonic isn't the middle, its his feet... So when he jumps (into a ball for example) he spins around his FEET, and not directly in the middle of the ball... Which looks retarded...
I had never seen that Sonic CD intro before, thats awesome! I agree with the guy that said Sonic should never talk, if a plot really needs some dialogue it can be told through other characters.
The mechanics of a traditional sonic game just seem really tired to me now and it will take someone really talented to make the games interesting again.
I for one am defiantly looking forward to the new sonic games. Finally looks like we could have a good sonic once again. Fan vids look really cool though. Like the first ones art style better then the latest vid posted though.

I was looking forward to it until I saw a gameplay video of it. It looks like they completely ruined the flow in movement and the physics of it not to mention the new homing attack thing. Maybe it'll feel right when you're actually playing it, but seeing it just looked wrong...

1 and 2 are the only ones I liked. HMPH.
~ Sonic 1 was terrible. Your memory fails you. Sonic 2, however, brought the cosmos into alignment.

Anyhow this isnt realtime, but it doesn't seem like anything that couldn't be achieved irt with current engines.

lmfao In tears, thanks! It's sad that some FX guy:thumbup: made a smarter more enjoyable rendition, Sega when will ye' learn.
Sonic 4 *** looks more like sonic 1 and a half to me.

Bottom line. I agree with the OT.

Sega has been contacted by a couple thousands of fans already, and Sega already commented on it:
http://blogs.sega.com/sonic/2010/08/25/that-mushroom-hill-video/
http://www.sonicstadium.org/blog/2010/08/22/damizean-unveils-the-egg-engine/
its proven it can be done game play wise with this, and its proven above that it can visually look the same!!
Im tempted to get in contact with this guy so I can just work on a fun remake with a good engine!
Man, I was thinking exactly the same when I looked at that WB level. Imagine the fun!
This is gaining the attention from everyone, lol. Even the stadium guys are trying to contact him:

It is what it is......heh ¬_¬
I really would like to play a sonic like this one
*bubble pops*

Unity logo is visable for a split second. So I'd say yes.
