They used it on Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars so for brink I guess they used that implementation. I think they said they worked with id to bring the mega texture support over to Id tech 4.
Also I don't think this technology is new. People have been using a similar tech for fonts and icons for a while. Although that was obviously a lot less complicated. (Using a texture atlas)
Surfa, no, the ETQW implementation is quite different to what we are using now, as is the id Tech 5 implementation. The ETQW method only worked in a 2d plane for getting lookups from the texture atlas. The Brink and Rage implementations use a small screen-space buffer for looking stuff up.
