Vertex painting in max and importing into UDK?

Hi all,

I've looked almost everywhere for a simple tutorial on vertex painting a mesh in Max, and how to bring it in to UDK. Hourences' site covers the vertex painting side inside of Max, but I'm not sure how to make it work inside of UDK (as his only refers to UE2).

Does anyone know a site that may explain how to set it up inside of UDK? I feel if I can see what goes on in the material editor, it may help explain to me how vertex colours actually work in an engine.
