Max problems

Im running into two different max issues atm and am running out of ideas on how to solve them.
The first is that objects disappear at random in my scene. If I go to the layer editor and hide and unhide them they'll reappear temporarily, but shortly after they'll vanish again (they are not being hidden btw).
The other problem is that when using an edit poly modifier with turbosmooth above it I cant see the edges or faces selected while show end result is toggled, though vert selections show up. The selection will show up the for the first click/marquee after entering the Edit Poly modifier for Editable poly, but not afterwords.
I updated my drivers to make sure the display issues weren't related to that, but doesn't seem to have fixed anything.

I had a similar issue (but not identical) with 09 hiding things at random. but it was only an issue with that 1 file.
I can't remember if I import/export to a new scene, or merged. Giver a try? hope it helps
