the default uv channel is now 2 instead of 1 when applying uvunwrap. driving me nuts. tried deleting ini file, deleting uv channels but no avail

open the uveditor and go tools save settings as default, that might be it.

"Reset UVW's" should stop it generating uv's on channel 2 by default, I seem to remember this fixed it for me a little while back when I was doing some blending work.

i tried that and no joy. Any object i apply an unwrap uvw it defaults to uv channel 2 rather than 1.

well what I meant before was to save the settings as default you revert to the 1st channel hit reset UV channels open the uv editor and then save that state as the default one.

If it doesn't work:

re install max
contact Autodesk, or check for updates (I never had this though)
write a script that wraps adding the modifier plus changes the UV channel to 1

you are a star , thanks for that. I just never thought it would be something that simple:)
I must have saved some new defaults at some point and forgotten about it
