3DS Max 2009: Problems with .dds filetype

Well this problem has grown to be quite an annoyance and quite frankly has me stumped. My 3DS 64 bit 2009 doesn't seem to be recognising the .dds filetype at all and has resulted in me having to install 2010 to suit my needs. This isn't exactly the end of the world but I find myself preferring to work in 2009 rather than it's bigger brother. As you can see in the second image the plugin manager is telling me that dxDDS.bmi is already loaded whenever I try navigating to it. Installing and thus uninstalling the ancient Nvidia dds plugin has been no help either.

So I'm wondering whether any others out there have encountered this problem at all? Or even better have any clue as to how I can go about resolving this. There's a link here to a thread on the area with someone who did some slightly more in-depth testing than I did: http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/autodesk-3ds-max--3ds-max-design-2009/dxdds-in-max-2009-64---bit/
