Get it there ^
Best part is that it came out on April 1st. It also isn't a joke. Seriously.
So far it's really bad-ass.
Tissue layers, hair growing in real time, etc. Also you can generate islands now.
i have been getting into this game ever so slowly. i cant play it without one of the graphics mods but its really quite fun once you start learning how everything works. i managed to have a decent fortress for a few years with over 100 dwarves before i got invaded by a bunch of goblins, who made short work of my tiny militia, then proceeded to murder everyone else in the fortress. Has anyone here tried the adventure mode? that sounds pretty neat.
Tried the new version and when I started my wagon was on the edge of a large hill with some small ponds. Horrible starting place. Then I had my dwarves dig deep to level 30 below ground where they hit one the vast caves. Didn't notice at first but once my dwarf broke through the wall the cave plunged straight down for another 17 levels.
I have to say, the adventure mode in this version is MUCH improved. I modded in lobster men as a race, and started adventuring. Upon entering the first cave I came across, I got punched in the chest by a Giantess, and proceeded to tear her head off, and use it as a projectile weapon to cripple the Giant that then came at me. 20+ z levels, and 30+ kills later, i run across a Cave Frog Woman Spearman, who i joined forces with. +30 more kills, she gets torn apart by a Jabberer (some kind of bird?) who I wrestle to death for revenge. After wandering around a bit more, i suddenly "succumb to infection" Apparently the first punch I took at the beginning of the cave got infected over time, eventually killing me. Awesome.
If it's actually a cavernous expanse filled with water, that's awesome, but if it's just an aquifier, there are ways to get past them - it's just rainwater, wells etc - it's tricky, but you can, for example, pump water out of one square of the aquifier, then dig down quickly until you get through to solid rock an mineral.
Cavernous expanse filled with water. The entire 3rd level down was water with every tunnel and exploratory downstairs I dug. My dwarves had no access to stone at all.
Arena mode is awesome, a dragon all covered in sprays of boiling blood from a dozen unicorns, what a battle.
Saw that he grabbed them by their upper body, flinging them around until they died, breaking whatever possible breaking, making others explode from firebreath while getting his dragony legs poked by the other unicorns.
I cant wait to go all theme hospital with the new healthcare system.
Did you guys read through wikis or intros/tutorials before jumping into the game? I've heard so many good things about the game that I tried to stumble my way through it last night but I haven't a clue what's going on.
After getting confused I looked through the intro tutorial on the wiki linked here but even that was way over my head at this point.
I read through a couple tutorials before starting to play the game again a few months ago. Still took a few hours of play to learn the basics. Haven't had a fortress get over 20 or so dwarves and survive though.
New goblins are terrifying. My 80 dwarf fort got taken down by 20 goblin ambushers. I assumed my well trained, full iron plated professional army would be able to at least damage the goblins through their chainmail.
Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've tunneled out a bunch of rooms and want to build beds and shit, but half the stuff I select "needs [that item]". Eg, I select build bed, and it says in red "Needs bed". Wtf? Also, there's fucking rocks all over the tunneled out areas and I don. Know what to do with all of it?
if you give it a week or two I believe a new version will come out that supports 2010, you'll still need to learn how to control the game through dwarf fortress :P
Bloody hell, workshop isn't even listed in the build menu, which means I'd have to have known to hit 'w' in the first place. o_O
eld: yup, was just wondering if it was worth it to start with the new build now, rather than waiting for it to stabilise, bugs-wise. I've decided to stick it out for now, though. It's bloody overwhelming!
Lotekk, some menues like the build one has to be scrolled with + and - for you to see all the build options, many lists are like that too.
overall 2010 should be playable, except for a handful of bugs (like acid rain I've heard), but all the new things make it quite more awesome, so hang in there for awhile.
Marine - thanks for that link, I ran through the first 5 tutorials last night and I can finally appreciate the game.
The tileset linked in that tutorial was also a big help to understand the game more than the ascii, and the iso view was neat, though largely useless.
I opted to use the older build of DF so I could follow along the tutorial and use their save game, as well as use the tilesets without any headaches. I figure as a new player I wont be able to appreciate the new features of DF2010 until I understand the basics anyway.
Strangely, I'm almost afraid to give this game a go... I'm worried that it will either be a waste of my afternoon or the beginning of a long and terrible addiction...
so im utterly new to this but I dont want to play the old Txt based looking one Ive seen ....so is that version posted on page 1 a offical new one out now?
I could probably play it if it looked more like that
Dwarf Fortress has always had the "roguelike" ascii style visuals, but you can find some tilesets around, or use Stonesense, a separate app that visualizes the scene. I personally prefer the ascii, but a tileset is good to learn on.
I can't even imagine. I tried building a massive tower out of glass and my dwarves fucked it all up when i told them to take apart a bridge, taking out the part that connected it to the tower, causing the bridge and most of the upper half of the tower to fall, crushing everything but a now insane infant.
I can't even begin to fathom building something like that..

Thread necro, but I feel it's for a good reason.
New Update for adventure mode adds Castles, the ability to actually aim for body parts of your opponent and such (enemies do it too) Night creatures, bandit hide outs, minotaurs, more caves baddies labyrinths and gore, Your reputation with a community will go up as you do tasks for them, and the higher your reputation the more willing the people of said community will be to join you in your adventure. Now you can amass a small squad to dole out justice to baddies, or raise hell with other communities. All in all, it sounds like it will greatly improve the quality of adventure mode (which thus far was "wrestle with wolves until you are skilled enough to explore the depths of hell")
edit: erp, not out yet, but it'll be out probably within a week, and for sure this month.

But, haha, it could also flood your fort.

i think i made a dwarf collect some wood?

@HonkyPunch
Not yet it seems, judging from some comments at the end of the thread Eld linked.
To get rid of the rocks you need to make a stone pile. (p > s) Then your dwarves with take those rocks to the pile for storage.
I'm wondering, though, if I should just play a prior build (notably, one that stonesense works with). Thoughts?

the tutorial is massively helpful! I am strangely excited.
