Gladiator Arena UDK- WIP

Hey guys, I recently started creating this environment for an unanounced sequel to a sucessfull HL2 MOD. Please note this is a WIP, lighting is definately placeholder and i plan to add more assets to the environment. Feedback is still appreciated, thanks!

Man that looks incredibly good. It sort of reminds me good times spent in Oblivion's arena.

Since your lighting is wip I wont crit anything.

i say you should use a different sand texture. Its a bit too clean and not the type of dirty and scattered sand I'd imagine in an arena.

The lighting seems a bit flat, perhaps you can up the contrast of the lighting with post process effects?

Looks really great so far! Have you thought about adding some cloth effects to the banners to give them a bit of motion?

I think the style you've got is very inconsistent. The reliefs look Roman or romanesque. The knot patterns look Celtic. The rib vaults look (late) Gothic. The railings look like Art Nouveau or something. The patterns on the flags and vaulting look completely ahistorical, for so far as I can tell. You're not going for anything historically accurate, but it simply doesn't look like it's built by one civilisation.

Furthermore, the fiery pillars. What's up with them? They're expensive to make, hard to light, don't serve any purpose and, worst of all, they block the view for some spectators.

Concerning reliefs: as far as I know, unpainted sculpture only appears in the Italian Renaissance and onward. Traditionally, sculpture, relief included, is painted; it's just that the painting from the Greek and Roman sculpture had bladdered off and everybody simply took it over without realising that it was once coloured with bright and saturated colours. Additionally, considering it's very expensive to sculpt such things, I wouldn't place them on a place as lowly as the walls of an amphitheatre.

I have to agree with Zwebbie. I do also find it a bit weird that the stones used for the inner circle are greyisch, while the rest of the arena has rather brownisch stones. I'd go for everything brownish:). When i look at your scene, I've got a bit of a unreal 3 flashback feeling by the overwelming amount of details. Try to balance this a bit. A lot of detail doesn't stand for a better environment. The inner ring walls could just be plain stones, that would even be a lot more logical.

and zwebbie struck gold...for me it feels mostly like somewhere in the uk during roman occupation, but if so, where the fuck has that sand come from, swap it for watery mud puddles and dirt caked walls, then i think the roman celtic thing would be relatively sane

Looks good, I would say the sand bothers me the most as well. It looks like you took a texture from a beach or a dessert.

spot on dude!

regarding the expensive relief and structures one could do so perhaps to show how rich and powerful his kingdom is but I agree it is rather unlikely.
