i was playing just cause 2 the other day....and i was just frothing at the mouth thinking what this game would be like as an FPS. this was probably due to the fact that far cry2 is one of my favorite games this generation. but it got me thinking.....why don't more people offer the option to play in first person OR third person ala FALLOUT 3/OBLIVION? i understand it takes may take a little bit of extra time to fine tune both perspectives. but...seems like catering to both fans would pay off for developers in the long run.

the phrase jack of all trades master of none springs to mind. The 3rd person mode in both those games was pretty bad, fluid character animations take a lot of work and they just don't have em. Partly the problem is characters move differently in 1st and 3rd person games, and when you show 1st person movement in 3rd person, you get a kind of weird non-natural movement

ps, I'm not saying it can't be done, just that its twice the work. If you ask most people if they'd like to do this much work, or twice that much work..

yeah. i get what you are saying...but MAN....sooooo many people that buy games are fans of either genre. the extra work seems to be such a smart business move. i know so many people that when a new game is announced.....they say "is it an FPS? or is it a third person game?". just seems like the extra work could serve EVERYONE.

and i know that bethesda has always been critiqued pretty hard for their anims pertaining to the third person. i was just using bethesda as an example. because they have been the only people that have done this. but just a little extra time seems like it could generate a LOT of cash in sales.

Its not just about the camera/workload. A lot of that decision is driven around what works best for the game, and the goals you're trying to accomplish. For example, Half Life 2 or Mirrors Edge would have been terrible in 3rd person. They are built for total immersion and the feeling of the character being an extension of the player - something that is inherently broken when you are looking at an avatar.

Plus have you played alien vs predator? The alien perspective is totally disorienting, and one of the big negatives that the game got in reviews. Now imagine that, but with a grappling hook that snaps the player forward at 300 mph. Or trying to grappling climb up a cliff. Or trying to stand on a car and grapple hook other cars. It would be downright unplayable.

There are a lot of games that could be played from a 1st person perspective without hurting gameplay much (like gears), but I don't think Just Cause 2 is one of them.

I thought Mirrors Edge was terrible in first person, it seemed like it was FPS just so it had a USP apart from the amazing visual direction. An option to play in 3rd person would have suited me but I'm not sure it would have been workable in the real world.
