so yeah, what the title says....I'm curious where do you even start looking!? ( other than the freelance section here) I have no problem locating and finding websites of gaming or vfx companies for fulltime work but when it comes to freelance/contract based I am stumped.

Word of mouth/having someone vouch for you from the outset always seems like it's a better way to connect with potential clients. Of course, it's not the only way. It's just worked the best in my own experience.
Ask your friends. Ask uni/college mates. Ask your old colleagues and co-workers.

generally on the freelance sites (there are quite a few) where people post jobs and then they are bid on, from my limited experience, you'll have to work for jack shit because people from 3rd world countries will undercut you on every single project.

I wouldnt mind if doing 1 or 2 projects for cheap just to add something to the resume at this point, but can't really see that working long term...
