WIP Custom m4 rifle

Hey guys , i gave the chainsaw a break for a while , and started work on a Custom m4 rifle (poly count of 8000) , i'm just gonna start texturing and just wanted to show u guys how its going , and to get some ideas on texturing , I was thinking maybe a cammo color sceme , any feed back would be great :poly121:

its based off several different m4 varients as originally it started as a lr300, where abouts would u say needs correcting

The modeling is technically pretty good, man, but this isnt an m4. It looks like you made a lot of changes and took a lot of liberties without actually understanding the anatomy of a gun. Most of the details are in the wrong/nonfunctional places, and there are a lot of scale issues. Eotech is tiny, the forward assist is too small/in the wrong place http://www.seasg.com/portals/81/ArticleImages/StickBolt/AGM%20Forward%20Assist%20Mod%20003.jpg , the eject port makes no sense....

not a fan of the little nub for a barrel. IMO make the barrel longer and the barrel cover shorter. like this

keeps going on the modeling before you start unwrapping everything and texturing. You still have a little ways to go.

The whole receiver/grip looks skewed and deformed, where it as should be more even.
stock isnt too right either, the eotech is too big either.

take a look around google and the site i´ve posted, there´s PLENTY of ref and dozens of m4´s already build.

thats kind of a totally subjective and not really a constructive crit, I can only assume he chose the short barrel cause thats how he wants it to look...

There are so many accuracy issues here that the barrel size is the least of the problems. I'd strongly suggest taking a minute to compare your model with the references in the following links:

They aren't the same exact models but they're the same base gun. Calling something "custom" is never a good excuse.

that's a drawing. not reference.

if it was a detailed blueprint or if it wasn't a gun that actually existed, then it would be a different story.
photographs are your best bet here.

The dogfight ink drawings are actually pretty accurate, but you NEED to look at more angles than just a flat side view.

And go through more than 1 page. There are a lot of crappy photos in there, but there are a lot of really good ones too, which will help you understand the actual shape/form of the weapon.

ETA: to the above. A lot of this is stuff that will come with an understanding of how the gun actually operates (something that far too many people don't bother to figure out before making one) The lower receiver is mostly flat (not angled as you have it) The positions/sizes of many of your details are wrong (Selector, mag lock, bolt lock, shell deflector), I don't understand what you're doing with the ejection port. There is a hole in the upper receiver. Inside the upper receiver is a bolt carrier group, it's roughly cylindrical in shape, and is what you see when the port cover is open (flipped down, as yours appears to be).

Go here, and learn the names of many of those little parts, and then find pictures of them from different angles:

i wasn't saying the drawing was inaccurate... my point was that it is A drawing of the full view of an existing weapon from one angle at 720 x 315... that is a highly limited amount of information to be modeling something off of and not what i would consider reference, maybe a piece of reference, but not the reference... why model something off of one drawing when you can get tons of actual pictures of detailed parts of this exact weapon from hundreds of angles all over the internet.

and yes, listen to racer.... he knows guns.

I'm not sure if it's the lighting, but that handle and possibly the entire stock looks REALLY thin. I'm not a gun expert or anything, but the proportions look quite off on a lot of things. Did you do a block-out and fully check your references before modelling?

Racer445 posted a link up there to DeicideNBF's pixagogo portfolio, with lot's of good references on all guns. Check it out, and get a lot of good pictures to go by. It saves a lot of time to just do a quick block out and know all your sizes and proportions beforehand.

That handle still looks way too thin. Take a look at this reference :

The rounded bit above the handle, I don't think it curves in as much as you have it. The stock itself also needs to be thicker. It's should be around as thick than the magazine holder (I don't know what it's called) from what I'm seeing in the pictures.

It´s a M4 Variant NAVY SEAL´s use.

The Receiver appears too slim Rob, get angled shots.
It appears that the tube that goes through the upper receiver (that holds the bolt etc) is tapering towargs the barrel.
It doesnt do that but goes straight.

It's looking nice thus far. Keep it up and keep in mind that a pure black BG doesn't always do justice...perhaps a midtone gray??

I dont think having a render against a black background is that much of an issue, as long as it stands out from it and you can clearly read the forms of the model then I think its fine. It would only be a problem if your model is too dark a shade of grey and on a black bg.....

I may be wrong here, but it looks like you messed your UV's up a bit. You may want to go and re-do them. The pixel density on each object is different. For example, it looks as if you have a high density on the grip, but low on the stock and barrel. In general you want all your UV's to be of the same proportions as they appear on your model (So don't scale them individually, but instead together, and also keep a checkerboard texture on to check UV sizes).
