Real 3d movies

mod
Ok, so instead of highjacking the avatar thread, i thought id start a new one. though, i feel alot of talk will revolve around avatar anyways.

so, originally, i saw avatar in 2d. at the end, i was impressed, but agreed with everyone else. it really isnt revolutionary. Then, i went and saw it again last night, this time in 3d. I finally understand why people even started saying it would be revolutionary to begin with. Personally, i think it is. Has nothing to do with the animation, or modelling, or story and anything like that. plain and simple, its the 3d side of it that is.

The first 3d movie i saw was pixars "up". Loved the movie, and thought the 3d was cool. There was one part i thought i could peak around a bush to see whats behind it. Though, alot of it really didnt look TOO much more hardcore than most movies. Avatar though, although not PERFECT (some blurry spots), had AMAZING depth to it. I couldnt believe it half the time. It really felt like i could throw a ball down the hallways.

Now, it really wasnt perfect, as i said, there were blurry parts (some of the fast action, and some of the objects that were suppose to be really close to you). But, seeing as this is brand new technology (If i remember correctly, they developed the 3d camera used to film the movie?), I think this really is a milestone for movies. It can only get better.

Seeing as i grew up using a commodor 64, and an amiga computer, seeing the graphics develope from that to what we see in games now, It makes me wonder how much further they will push movies. I think part of it will definitely be to get rid of the glasses. maybe put a huge sheet of what the glasses are made of over the entire movie screen, or something like that.

Im interested in what your guys/gals thoughts are on the whole subject of 3d movies (and possibly games to come!). Has anyone seen any other 3d movies, as well as avatar? are they comparable?

Personally I think 3d is the best way to see movies. I love going to the 3d Imax theater. Best movie I saw so far in 3D, Monsters Vs. Aliens :) Movie was OK but the 3d in it was great. I even got motion sickness in a few parts HAHA.

3d is really the only next progression in movie technology (I guess that's what we will call it).

i doubt the next step would be getting rid of the glasses. if you just put a sheet of that material over the screen then i don't think it would work correctly as you would be eliminating the spatial variation needed for your eyes/brain to process the information correctly. it would still look 3d, but just not as prominent since the screen would be 100ft away as opposed to the glasses being half an inch. only guessing though.
how are the glasses made now anyway? are the two sections made of two different materials (i.e. how they used to be the blue and the red)? i'm sure the tech is getting better on that front as some friends of mine said i could still go watch it in 3d and it not be a blurry mess. now i has a sad.

they have differently polarized layers for each eye, meaning they will take in differently polarized lights.

ah, so yeah, the screen thing wouldn't work then... i thought that maybe the material was the same now and it was more dependent on just both eyes interpreting the info... you can't fold the stuff on top of each other, i've tried that noise in the past... doesn't work

the thing that is better now is that each eye can get its own fully colored image rather than the blue-red mixup from before.

theoreticly you could show two images side on side in the cinema, and everyone could cross their eyes ;)

3D movies/games just need to not be seen on displays but worn over the eyes so each eye has its own display so it focuses on what you look at. More like these things,

Well, more to your point, what about 3D TVs? That's the next tech that the TV companies are going to be fighting about (actually, they already are).

I dislike it. It forces you to look at the image in a certain way at a certain spot, and if you don't, then it punishes you by making your eyes hurt. I enjoy letting my eyes wander around an image and I can't do that as easily with 3d films.

The problem is that you have depth, and you still have depth of field. If I want to focus on something far away, my eyes expect it to become focused and not remain blurry. It hurts.

I hope the 3d fad silently fades away until we get holograms.

I actually did wander around quite alot when watching avatar, but that movie is not too hardcore with un-needed 3d effects, it was more like letting my eyes wander around a scene with depdth, rather than just a flat painting.

I enjoy 3d films, it gives me reason to get up and go to the cinema again.

I'm not really a fan of the whole cinema experience i.e. watching a film in a chair that I don't find too comfortable in a room full of other people who decide to make noises/get up/bring crying babies (not that I have anything against these people).

Seeing as I can't replicate the experience of going to watch a 3d film at home, I don't mind paying a bit more and putting up with the above.

It seriously is, Sony,LG,Samsung and plenty of others are seriously pushing this technology out this year. One of the Discovery Channel's is going to have 24H 3D shows by the end of the year. ESPN 3D launches in June. Probably by next season, NFL is going to be broadcasting in 3D. NBA had a 3D Live showing in a theater some months ago. Sony is updating their software on the PS3 to have Blu-Ray and Games to show in 3D.

Ahh its a good year, can't wait for CES this week. (I live in Las Vegas and I can't go :( )

    Cameras look odd though, lol.

imagine stereoscopic 3d combined with track-ir, where the screen will adjust the view depending on how you look at it.

Oh wow, I never expected it to sort of filter down to mainstream so fast.

I'd watch films with the glasses but regular TV is pushing it a bit... although I would love to watch the world cup in 3D lol.

How many of you have the equipment to view 3D at home? And if you do what kind of equipment?

I found the sense of depth that Coraline had too it (in 3D) to be just phenominal, first 3d movie i've been to that wasn't all gimicky, and the Other Mother's spider hand was just creepy as all hell
