Intro and greetings

Greetings! Although technically not a VG artist (hoping that doesn't cause a mod to kick me off before things get going), for the past many years I have been working in simulation - low-poly stuff only. My day job is technical lead for a department focused on driving simulation, and my work is primaly ground-vehicle based (speeds under 70mph). So far it's been ok, but I am looking to "take it to the next level" and I'm guessing a lot of the talent pool here can help me do just that.

I am looking to ramp up on the latest and greatest gaming (graphics, content) technology, and stumbled over this site just before NYE, and have spent nearly the entire weekend going through the reference and inspiration threads. Lots of great material, and I'm hoping to contribute something myself.

However, one thing that I haven't uncovered yet are tools, tips and techniques for creating city environments (hang on a sec): my work requires lots of environmental-ish "stuff", and although it doesn't necessarily have to be photo-real, it does have to be plausible, and thus all the post-armegeddon type environments kind of miss my particular boat - I can appreciate the detail etc. but I need some more focused advice, I think.

I'm looking in particular for medium to large-scale city environments, things to clutter up the general environment to provide what military types call "pattern of life" stuff. Right now things look pretty barren.

I'll be posting some of my work examples as soon as I sort out where/what would be the best place to put them - nothing more annoying than non-persistent links, advice welcome.

So to all you folks who have posted in the reference and inspiration thread, thanks! and to the rest of you, greetings!

Will sort through some material and get it uploaded in the next day or two so more of this post will make better sense than the text-only version.

Thanks!
