just out of interest, what software do your studios use to manage assets like reference images/videos, textures and other things?

any suggestions?

ironlore and cheyenne mountain used perforce
ironlore used a proprietary tool called art manager for titan quest that functioned in the same way
3point used the per128 tyrant program (sftp)

Reference material we don't usually add to source control. Just game assets and their source files. Reference videos and images usually is just on a network share that is backed up weekly. Also we don't check in concept art. Just the final concept in the asset folder.

Perforce is awesome though. I wrote a MaxScript interface that takes the current max file and builds a list of all related textures and export files. So you can check files in an out quickly without ever leaving Max. It also makes sure you are working with the latest files.

SOE uses Perforce except the EverQuest 1 team. We used a big shared harddrive.
