A couple of concepts for a Thor character I'm going to model for a hobby game. Critiques would be appreciated. Thanks!

here's an updated image with the head shifted up and beard added. Not sure about the beard, might shorten it or just give him stubble.

Cool stuff, I like your sketchy yet fairly defined and bold style.

I think the beard makes him look too much like a generic fantasy dwarf, in order to keep it and still have him look like Thor, I think you'd really need to beef up those proportions - longer legs, more muscular chest etc.

Without the beard it'd work better as it is, although I still think the proportions could be more "superhero-ish", but maybe that's just because that's how I think of Thor

He's a bit hunched over, and I don't imagine thor with that sort of attitude. I think of him more as a chest out, eyes on the horizon, manly cape flowing in the wind type guy. Overall design is cool though.

Also, I am anti-beard.

thanks for the replies. i may draw his head without the helmet and see how it goes. My original idea for this Thor was to make him more human and a bit worn down. I was thinking of John Buscema's Conan, but a little less built.

I had to look up ragnar, I like his look! I may use him as reference.

I think he'd look cooler if the beard length was down to the red line (just a little longer), but that's up to you of course.

Beefier arms, smaller ribcage? His ribcage right now looks pretty massive by comparison, and its difficult to tell whether or not its the armor. Perhaps break that breastplate piece in half, backside, frontside, straps connecting the two. Loosen it up a bit if you want the armor that wide so we can tell more clearly his entire ribcage isn't quite that massive.

Or just beef up the arms.

Regardless.

Looks cool.

Oh! Also his thigh/knee/lower leg proportions look pretty messed up. If his ribcage is going to be huge, his bone structure obviously will not result in such tiny knees.

cool concept. i think it's strange you're not following the concept very close for the model. personally i'd prefer to nail everything down with a concept first, but this works too.

his chest is feeling strange on your model, i can see you're still working on the model, so maybe making a quick block out of his body underneath, when you get back to it, would help. i think the breastplate is what's throwing you off. it's kinda hard when stuff is in the way.

how the breastplate tucks into the belt is odd to me, i'd check some references there.

@killingpeople: i decided to follow the final concept at the bottom of page 1. things i've changed :

-fur gloves vs metal.
-swapped shoulder armor for helm.
-fur shorts vs the same material as the vest, but i may stick with the concept on that one.

I still need to model his fur cape.

The chest was blocked out underneath and I used that geometry for the breastplate.
I see your point about the chest, I'm trying to get more of a classic strong man look, but it's been a struggle. Here's an update, let me know what you think.

It's looking better, but I'd definately split the breastplate (cuirass, I guess) in half - one piece covers front, one piece covers back. I don't know of hardly any armor in which it's all one piece. As it is, he can't really get inside of it. His beard is covering the hole but it's safe to assume it'd either be a painful squeeze or impossible.

See? Look up some references for that. Unless the cuirass has a very different design with only straps going over the shoulders making for much large head hole, it's always two pieces. Even then, most always, two pieces.

@Two Listen : ahhh...ok. ya, i still need to add the details. I'll try to get to the detailing after i've modeled the fur cap. I'm trying to get the overall shape down at the moment. I forgot to put the straps (devide the hyde/leather armor in 2) in the concept as well, thanks for pointing it out.
