First I've heard of this, sounds like a cool mix of Fallout and STALKER. Should be interesting to see how this develops.

Is this the one being made by people who split off from the STALKER team?

Got my eye on this one.

That looks pretty amazing. I love a good post apocalypse game (or movie, or anything really. Well, besides reality), and this is looking like it might deliver on some of the atmosphere I've been looking for.

    In Soviet Russia...

Damn, this looks badass. Never heard of it before.

Hope it's more like Fallout 3 than Stalker.

    It's linear Stalker tbh.

And yeah made by group that've split of STALKER team in 2004 i think (mostly art team), they used x-ray engine and 've been sued for it (GSC accused them of stealing), but won.

If it's like Stalker for Xbox it should be great, at least we can hope it'll run well then. I'm looking forward to it, the Stalker games were some of the freshest FPS's i've played so far, better than Crysis, UT and CoD I think.

First book (Metro 2033) is great. Second book (Metro 2034) is slightly boring. Hope the game follows it's own story and not the story of the book. From some clues I fear it follows the storyline of the book.

Been following this for awhile. It's made by alot of the ex-GSC team that left after Stalker was released.

Really wanna read the book when it get's translated.

I thought it was on there own 4a engine that they made it. Oles Shishkovtsov was one of the ex-employees of GSC that left to form 4a games and he was lead engine programmer on STALKER, so i don't know how they could be sued for it.

Theres even a couple of tech videos showing the 4a engine.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrSGvZczNtg[/ame]

It does resemble X-Ray a lot, but theres no surprise when its been coded by the same guy.

Necrobump but, yeah. Game has been out for some days now. Completed it on PC in an 11 hour sitting (never again..) and it's great.
The atmosphere is as good as that of S.T.AL.K.E.R. and Cryostasis, gameplay is solid and challenging and the visuals are incredible, among the best I've seen in a game.
Guns feel powerful when used properly and the damage model on the human enemies is incredibly awesome.

It's not without flaws though; Facial animation is dead and the English voiceacting is pretty bad.

But overall it's an amazing game worth playing through, several times.

Gorgerous atmosphere, but the crux of the gameplay (shooting) is pretty poor.

    Necro here-
Playing this game, I am reminded of System Shock 2 and various other semi stealth FPS games of it's time. Maybe it's just me, but pumping up my dart gun and skewering a tunnel Nazi from the shadows is totally a throwback to the good times.
    Dyamn.
    (good game, btw)

just finished it. it feels like a scarier version of Half-Life 2. The single player is just as good too. Really solid story.

I like it, but it's not as good as Stalker. They took away the exploring and freedom and with that most of the mistery and wonder. But they do a really good job at telling their story though. Russian voices is really nice; eliminates the problem of low quality english voice actors I think.
The "bullets for currency" is cool but I prefer just money if ammo is so scarce: I just cleared a station with only 3 regular bullets in my gun at a time, going on the bullets of every next dead enemy. Very cool (Bioshock 2 eat that!), but you get so few military grade bullets it's a bit of a disaster if you shoot them by accident. And the knife is so useless.

The outdoor levels aren't as good also: the art looks lesser quality, the lighting is more bland and the post-processing makes me feel nauseous.

I didnt think you could shoot the military grade bullets? Either way, I have a bunch of 5.56 ammo. I mainly use throwing knives on the grunt mutants (just stabbing and occasionally throwing) and the helsing on the human enemies. Absolutely loving the game so far, I expect I'm close to the end now..
Ps. To anyone just starting: I. Suggest using the magnum and throwing knives on the mutants, the bastard gun absolutely sucks :p, and the first couple of hours was a bit frustrating for me when fighting mutants, I was getting my ass kicked to no end.

You can only shoot the military bullets with the automatic guns like the bastard or AK. I once fired an entire clip before realizing that was half of my money...
I think it's not too hard on the most difficult setting even, I mostly die because of traps and so, just a few times because of an enemy with a gun, and even then it's only vaguely reminiscent of Call of Duty's difficulty.

Call of Duty's difficulty is ridiculous. If I recall, it has endless enemy respawns, and they have infinite grenades.

Finished the game late last week, had a real blast. The volumetric effects in this game are awesome if a tad demanding. Looks spectacular in DX10 at 1900*1200.

I didn't find it that difficult tbh, just that annoying amoeba part at the later stages of the game.

Just started reading the book and you can tell the devs did their homework on this title.

It's because you don't do less damage to humans on the hardest difficulty, you just take a realistic ammount of it, coupled with less ammo and more aggressive/smarter AI.
Unlike Call of Duty where the highest difficulty means your bullets are made of bread and you're wearing sheets of crackers for armor.

Completed it for the third time today, still want to go back. There's just something about it's atmosphere that is so inviting, makes me want to re-create part of my hometowns shelter in 3D and apocalypsyfy it.
Amazing game for sure, really makes me look forward to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, possibly Metro 2034.

What i want to know is how is the gun-porn aspect? The thing i liked most about stalker was collecting, buying, selling, and finding attachments for the guns. What does this game offer ifrom that perspective?
  • Skamberin

    Skamberin polycounter lvl 13
Not too much, there are about two-three customization(trade in old gun for new one with new attachment) options per gun, about 10 guns and two different ammo types (the other one also being the currency of the game)

Unfortunatley it's not as deep as S.T.A.L.K.E.R., then again the game is so linear I feel it wouldn't lend itself to having an abundance of modifications and gun-types, would be very awesome if it did though.

You can also pretty much find all the best guns in the game without buying them, which kind of defeats the purpose of hoarding up money for a new weapon.

At least they feel proper and kill the things you shoot at, the pneumatic weapons are especially awesome.

Well, honestly stalker only had the illusion of being open, you had a pretty linear story path with cool levels, and then a bunch of random/boring-ish sub-plot grind type scenarios like finding a dogs tail or findinng a random anomoly that was just filler... So if being more linear means there is more "real" gameplay, that is cool with me.

Lets not even mention the hours wasted simply walking back and forth in the game to the two people in the entire game that would buy/sell weapons.

Which is why the removal of vehicles entierly was baffling.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: SHOC is best played with mods imo.
Hope they have some info on the sequel at E3.
    glynnsmith wrote: »

Agreed. I feel a huge part of that was due to lackluster sounds and animation, coupled with a weird hitbox and enemy reaction to hits.
This was mostly remedied in Call of Pripyat though.

Yeah the damage system always felt a bit wonky in Stalker, like unless you have the best armor and weapons in the game, you can get killed almost instantly but need to unload a full clip into an enemy to do any damage.... And with all "leveling up" type games, and soon as you get that cool armor, and all the cool guns, all your enemies have it as well, and its the same stupid game as it was when you start....

Gah, yeah ranting. I just recently played through it again. =)

As soon as I get my Metro 2033 book and Roadside Picninc I'll be doing a playthrough of all the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. SHOC will probably be grating at parts :P
