Need tips on how to unwrap this model!!!

Having trouble with this model. Its a tree for a side-scroller. Here's the pic:

pelt map would work great on that.

Hopefully you made that out of splines and remembered to check on auto generate UV's before poly modeling. If not I agree it could be a good candidate for pelt or spline mapping. If you're using 3dsmax you can try peel in renderhjs textools script.

You could also auto unwrap it and stitch edges together and relax as you go possibly straighten a few edges to make a nice layout that is easy to paint on.

THing is guys, I'm using Maya 2009. There's no pelt tool.

You can use Roadkill to split seams that automatically unwrap via pelt if you don't have any preserved coordinates.

Well you can kind of pelt in Maya. You apply a planar map to a favorable angle, then break edges as if plotting seams and relax.

Or you can hunt around for some mel scripts.

There is also headusUV which is a stand alone unwrap app but its not free.

In maya 2009, just use the "horizontal" and "vertical" option in the unfold panel.
That works great for such unwrap.
