Hey Everyone,

I'm modeling an environment for work that has a high amount of foliage and quite a large open space, so I'm experimenting with Maya's built in LOD system for the first time. So far I three versions of a tree with varying amounts of polys and one rendered image meant to be used as a billboard for far off trees. Is anyone familiar with a way to create a Billboard plane in Maya that will still work after the LOD group is applied?

My goal is to have several different trees in their own .mb files, referenced in to the main scene. Such as BaldCypress01.mb, GenericConfifer01.mb, etc. Then using the reference tool position them accordingly but still function as their LOD groups. Thanks!

Just an update, I've ended up creating a mel script that just creates aim constraints for every billboard plane and aims it at a locator. I've then parented the locator to a main camera and I'll just move the locator to whichever camera I'm rendering from.

The LOD seems to be working okay, and does improve performance when I have several dozen trees in a scene quite a bit. I need to improve the tops of the trees. If anyone has any suggestions on making the LODs run faster or how to better organize the system please let me know. Thanks!
