Hey everyone, so as many of you know theres a 3D character art contest going on at cubebrush : Art War 3D
https://forums.cubebrush.co/t/cubebrush-art-war-3d/1546And I figured creating a progress thread here would be great considering the last character contest polycount had, there was so much great feedback. So as I go along I will post here to see what people think and incorporate that into my character somehow.
My goal is to create a demon/oni wyvern beast in the Fantasy Realm. I want to create a very dark, demonic yet slightly traditional character that resembles that of a final fantasy style creature. Something of a mixture between a Behemoth and a Oni/Wyvern. Im sure at some point the name will change but for now I will just call it Oni Wyvern. This is a very loose reference page since we have to put it on a small size (2048x2048) but I have a huge reference folder full of stuff. As far as the oni aspect of it I want to keep it very grungy and dark but yet still have some sort of neo styled demonic presence in a creature.

I started sketching out some rough broad ideas to get the process flowing.

I'm going to participate too, but in the sci fi team, sooo GLHF ^^
So I'm kind of just playing with shapes right now to see whats working. The rope around his forearm will be much thicker with wider ends for silhouette purposes. The priest beads are just place holders for now but will be damaged and have a design on them later. Theres a jewel shard in his chest that I want to have skin kind of wrapping around almost as if its being held in there. I haven't really done much to the main torso yet and back but this is also a really early stage right now. I plan to give him shoulder armor as well. Possibly a face of a traditional oni demon. Lots to do still.
A couple of different angles of the current stage I'm at. Haven't touched the ropes yet. Broke a little symmetry for the front and back body. Lots to still do. Might start some of the armor tomorrow.
Made an oni mask acting as a shoulder plate. I liked the idea that he would wear it at some point but it was strong enough to be armor and just slings it on his shoulder. The mark on the mask is a demonic symbol for Returning to the infernal realm. So maybe he puts it on to return to hell. (Work in progress lol) Still need to make the strap for it but for now I think I'm going to start blocking out the back of the body. Want to make sure I have the entire body done before I start adding any more assets like chains, lanterns, talismans, etc etc. Not sure on what ill make exactly but those are thoughts for now.
Trying to figure out some proportions right now but I wanted to keep the Kanabo aspect considering thats an iconic weapon of an Oni to use and I didn't want to add another asset to have it hold on his body, so why not have it as a weapon. lol (Still subject to change)
I decided to change the name from Oni Wyvern to Kuroi Akumu (Black Nightmare) Theres a lot of Oni's popping up on this contest and lets be honest, Oni Wyvern sounds dumb. lol I made some base armor for the legs but I haven't detailed them yet. Now that I have pretty much everything blocked out for the most part Im going to just hammer it with detail. Theres a lot to still do but next time I post I would imagine it will be a full detailed character and posed.
I still have quite a bit of modeling left but I figured I'd post a more polished W.I.P post compared to the other ones I did. I switched out the other oni mask because I felt it gave too much of a cartoony look. Next I'll be making the floating disk with the talismans hanging from it above him.
So I'm messing around with the idea of adding wings and I wanted to see what anyone else thought. Its a really strong heavy creature and I dont want the wings to be so big that he can actually use them. I kind of imagine hes been locked away for a long time that he can no longer use his wings and the rest of his body had to make up for it. Im also thinking of doing away with the beads and adding a cuff around his neck with chains from it to his hands. As if he is bound in a three way chain setup. Not sure about that part yet. I added a few different angles to give a better idea. Figured Id check now before going into detail and changing a bunch of stuff permanently.
Spent some time refining areas. Not a drastic difference but I'm at the point of being done on the sculpting end. I took a break and came back to it but I just don't want to do anymore to it at this phase. Kind of tired of looking at it and it seems like the more I touch on it the less it improves lol. Im going to start retopologizing it now so I can start texturing it in substance painter. I did a couple of quick renders to show where I'm at currently.
A buddy of mine saw my cut up model and wanted to print it so I figured I might as well post it here to show that too. Did a small quick print just to test if the pieces fit together .
Now were doing a much bigger detailed print. The head alone is 7.5 inches long and 5 in tall
50 years later I have finished the reto for the main body and baked the maps.
(Substance Painter) Now to finish the assets which are about 50% complete.
Throwing some color on to get a feel for what I want it to look like. Haven't been able to really hit on it as much as due to moving and Im not the greatest texture artist so any C&C is much appreciated!
I think I may take out the beads. Not sure yet. So far it doesn't really help the character.
Ive only really touched on the main body and the rope and weapon/armor I just threw some materials on. Everything's got a lot of work to do still but I'm glad I'm at least in the texturing stage. lol Only 2 weeks left!
Decided to get rid of the emissive for the most part and keep it calmer. Still chipping away at it slowly. Lots to do.
Hey everyone! This is my final entry for the Art War character contest. Throughout the project I made a lot of changes and learned a lot from this experience. Theres a lot of things that definitely need work and certain aspects suffered due to time and life but in the future I hope to do better on that.
